  • Mumbai: Body of doc found hanging from fan in family friend`s flat

The body of Dr Ravi Ramrath Yadav, a 49-year-old Dombivli resident and an employee of a pharmaceutical company, was found in a flat in a Mhada building in the Teen Dongari locality behind the Goregaon police station on Monday night.

While initial reports suggested suicide, injury marks on Dr Yadav’s forehead and chest have led authorities to suspect foul play.

Dr Yadav was reportedly a frequent visitor to the flat, where two women, described as family friends, reside. One reported that Yadav appeared worried and irritable when he visited on Monday night.

“According to the woman, a strange sound prompted her and her friend to rush to a bedroom, where Dr Yadav was found hanging from the ceiling fan. She screamed, alerting neighbours. In the process of taking the body down, it fell, bruising the forehead and chest,” said an officer of the Goregaon police.

The police have sent the body to JJ hospital for a detailed post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. “The injuries have raised concerns and prompted a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death,” said an officer.

The police are collecting evidence and statements from neighbours and the woman in whose flat the body was found. The woman’s parents confirmed that Dr Yadav was a family friend who often visited. “They expressed shock and confusion over why he might have taken this step,” the officer added.
Anand Bhoite, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 11, stated that a preliminary accidental death report (ADR) had been filed.

    Second incident

Meanwhile, Pratham Naik, 23, a resident of Ganesh Nagar, Kandivli, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the 23rd floor of a building on Monday night.

Naik had recently started working at a pizza shop in a mall in Goregaon, having worked there for only three days. On Monday, he appeared reluctant to go to work. When his father inquired about it, he eventually left home, claiming he was headed to the mall. However, a call from his workplace informed his father that Naik had not shown up.

Concerned, Naik`s father called him and found him at the Dahanukarwadi Metro station in Kandivli. Understanding his son`s distress, he brought Naik back home. Soon after returning, Naik suddenly ran to the 23rd floor of their building and jumped to his death. His parents, who had followed him upstairs, witnessed the incident.

The Kandivli police quickly arrived at the scene and rushed Naik to the hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The police have begun an investigation to determine the exact reason behind the suicide. The Kandivli cops have registered an ADR and started the investigation.

  • Ghatkopar hoarding collapse: IPS officer Quaiser Khalid suspended

Quaiser Khalid, a 1997 batch IPS officer was suspended by the state home department in connection with the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse case. The home department issued a detailed order stating that the suspension was initiated based on a report submitted by the Director General of Police on 21st May.

The report found gross irregularities and administrative lapses in sanctioning the hoarding during Khalid`s tenure as Commissioner of Railway Police, Mumbai.

The detailed order issued by the home department, states that,”a preliminary inquiry has been conducted regarding a hoarding collapse in Ghatkopar, Mumbai on 13/05/2024 which was erected on Railway Police Land, resulting into death of 16 people,  a report was submitted by the Director General of Police, Maharashtra State, dated 21 May, 2024 referred has clearly mentioned the gross irregularities and administrative lapses in sanctioning the hoarding that collapsed on 13th May, 2024.”

The order further reads that, “the Government of Maharashtra has decided to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Shri. Md. Quaiser Khalid, IPS (MH : 1997), Additional Director General of PCR, Maharashtra State the then CP, Railways,

Mumbai in respect of administrative lapses and irregularities in sanctioning the hoarding, on his own, without approval of the DGP office and in respect of the misusage of powers by allowing massive hoarding size of 120 X 140 sq ft deviating from the approved norms as pointed out in the report of Director General of Police, Maharashtra State.”

Khalid has been suspended under the provision of All India Service (Discipline and appal rules 1969.”the Government of Maharashtra is satisfied that it is necessary and desirable to place Shri. According to sources, the DGP office had been conducting an internal probe even before the hoarding collapse when they discovered that Khalid had approved Ego Media hoardings on his last day in office, without obtaining permission from the DGP office and without issuing tenders. While the DGP office was investigating and had issued a show cause notice to Khalid, the hoarding collapsed on 13th May due to rough weather. He is being investigated by the SIT of the Mumbai crime branch, and officials are likely to record his statement after completing all formalities. So far, he has not been summoned by the SIT.

The SIT has found that, despite knowing the land belonged to the state government and the BMC was the licensing authority, Khalid approved the hoarding on the application of Ego Media director Bhavesh Bhinde, who has been arrested by the crime branch. Officials also discovered that Khalid approved a hoarding size of 120×140 sq ft, which is larger than the BMC mandate. It was found that the over sized hoarding was one of the reasons it collapsed on 13th May during the rough weather.

  • T20 World Cup 2024 | "You`ll struggle to find a guy like Warner": Ponting

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting paid tributes to retired opening batsman David Warner by saying that it will be difficult to find someone like him because of the impact he had on Australian cricket.

David Warner`s 15-year-old international career came to an end after Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2024 which led to the elimination of Australia.

“(I) put my arm around him. I said, `…just take a moment tonight to sit back by yourself and reflect on what`s been an unbelievable career across all three formats for Australia.” Ponting said during the ICC`s Digital Daily show.

“We know he retired in the summer from test cricket, but you`ll struggle to find a guy that`s had as big an impact on all three forms in Australian cricket than David Warner has.”

David Warner in the early days played under the leadership of Ponting and later was coached by him while representing Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League.

“I`ve been able to play with him, I`ve been able to coach him in the IPL the last couple of years, and I really enjoy his company. So, he should be very proud of what he`s done,” Ponting said.

In the Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024, Australia suffered defeat against India in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia on Monday night before Afghanistan`s victory over Bangladesh knocked the 2021 champion out of the semi-final race.

Having already retired from the Test Cricket and One-Day Internationals at the start of this year, Warner made it very clear that he would pull the curtains on his international career after the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Following this, star pacer Josh Hazlewood said to full in the absence of Warner in the dressing room would be difficult to fill.

“We`ll definitely miss him around the group, out in the field and off-field. (An) amazing all-format career,” he said.

“It`s sort of been a slow burn with Test cricket, and ODI cricket and now T20. So, life without him, we`ve sort of gotten used to it a little bit it`s always different when you lose a player that`s been there for so long.

Despite announcing retirement from all formats in international cricket, Warner stated that he will consider to return to the side for the Champions Trophy in 2025 if he continues to fare well.

Countries love their athletes and have varying ways of appreciating their contribution to their sport. Two athletes from competing nations—Australia and India—have the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, or the country will shower the athlete with a unique high-ranking recognition—Sachin Tendulkar—Bharat Ratna.

However, only a handful of athletes worldwide have been honoured by getting recognised on the currency note of their country.  One recent example is Sir Vivian Richards of Antigua. Richards has been widely recognised as one of the most destructive batsmen ever. His photograph of playing a hook shot, one of his trademark strokes, has been included as Sir I.V.A “Viv” Richards – The Master Blaster” on a Two Dollar currency bill by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. On the other side of the currency bill are the names of the islands where the currency is in use – Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Christopher & Nevis, Montserrat, Dominica, St Lucia, St Vincent  & The Grenadines, and Grenada.

Other athletes from different countries have been immortalised to honour their contributions.  Sir Frank Worrell, known for his exemplary leadership and sportsmanship, was the first full-time black captain of the West Indies cricket team. His influence extended beyond the cricket field, fostering a sense of pride and unity among Caribbean people during the 1950s and 1960s. Several Caribbean nations have featured his image on their currency to honour his legacy, celebrating his contributions to cricket and society.   Their inclusion on currency bills is a testament to their status as national icons and their role in inspiring future generations of cricketers.

While not featuring sports heroes on currency bills, India honours them through prestigious awards like the Bharat Ratna. Sachin Tendulkar, one of the greatest cricketers in history, received the Bharat Ratna in 2014, making him the first sportsperson to receive India`s highest civilian award. Tendulkar`s exceptional career and influence on cricket and Indian society are celebrated and revered through this honour, demonstrating the nation`s deep respect and admiration for its sports icons and the profound impact they have on the nation`s collective consciousness.

Other examples of athletes their nations have recognised include Pelé of Brazil for his football stardom, Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand for his conquest of Mt Everest in 1953, and Liberia’s football star George Weah.

These examples illustrate how countries honour their sports heroes by featuring them in currency or through prestigious awards. Such gestures of admiration and appreciation celebrate the athletes` achievements and inspire future generations to pursue excellence and contribute to their nation`s legacy.

The Geo-Polymer concrete enables quick road repairs, reducing traffic interruption. Using the technique, potholes are filled with Geo-Polymer concrete, which blends in perfectly with the pre-existing cement concrete surface to form a sturdy, cohesive road structure.

The BMC statement further said that using the `Geo-Polymer` technology is a big step towards making Mumbai`s roadways free of potholes. The eco-friendly building materials also guarantee the resilience and longevity of road surfaces.

“The use of technology would offer the commuters and locals a safer and more convenient transit experience,” the BMC said.

BMC Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani highlighted to achieve the goal of pothole-free roads in Mumbai, the roads maintained with Geo-Polymer technology are safe for vehicles, he said, according to the BMC statement.

Under the direction of Abhijeet Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Project), the BMC has stepped in to make sure that the roads at the Gundavali Metro station are properly maintained and are driveable.

Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs in their final Super 8s match to eliminate Australia and become the second team, after India, to reach the elimination stage from Group 1. This is the first time Afghanistan has reached the semifinals of a global tournament.

India had made Australia`s qualification more difficult by defeating them just hours earlier in Saint Lucia. Afghanistan was placed second following their surprising victory over Australia a few days previously.

Coming to the T20 World Cup 2024 match that Afghanistan will always remember, Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq led the Afghan bowling attack and helped their side defend the given target of 115. The second inning of the match was reduced to 19 overs, and the target was 114 runs after Rain played a spoilsport in the second inning.

After the defeat, Mitchell Marsh-led Australia are also out of the tournament. The Aussies ended up in third place in the Group 1 table of the Super Eights with just two points.

Afghanistan booked their place in the final four when they overcame Bangladesh`s fight in the final game of the Super Eights in St Vincent. After scoring 115/5 in the first innings, Afghanistan bowled out Bangladesh for 105 in a rain-affected game, securing an 8-run win (DLS method).

  • T20 WC 24 | "If SA get past that semi-final, they are going to win final": Hogg

Speaking exclusively during Star Sports Press Room, Former Australia cricketer Brad Hogg talked about South Africa’s chances making it to the finals and winning their maiden ICC title, said, “They are just spawning from here. It’s amazing. I regard Hendricks as well, I really like him as a player. And then you`ve got to build a wall, they can build a nice spin with especially Klassen. I expect him to do really well against Afghanistan and get to the finals. I think it is going to be South Africa and we have got a really strong squad, good spin with Shamsi and Maharaj. I don`t plan on the big nations now, and I think they`ll have to go out there and play it out again instead and just have that confidence to go with the final side. For me, if I get past that semi-final right, South Africa is going to win the final this year. I just think I`ve got the team balanced and I`ve got the aggression as well. I`ve got that kindness. I really like Markram as the captain. He is correct and very composed. And I also think, we are going to win as a very well-composed team, not panicking and just setting the right conditions.”

Also Read: OTD: 83 team and the historic win

Speaking exclusively during Star Sports Press Room, Former Australia cricketer Brad Hogg shared his thoughts on the Australian team`s performance against Afghanistan, and if Pat Cummins could have been the captain for the tournament, said, “Australia took Afghanistan too lightly. They rocked up. They weren`t at their best. They were terrible in the field. They were terrible with the ball. And at the end of the day, Afghanistan deserved to be there rather than Australia. Talking about Mitchell Marsh, he is probably the bro of the team. He`s like Andrew Symonds. He has a lot of fun. If there`s a little bit of division in the camp, or there`s a bit of argy-bargy, he generally lights the load. So, he`s that bro. But the other thing is, Pat Cummins probably wasn`t a certainty to play in the playing XI of this World Cup. If you`re going to drop one of them for an extra spinner, it probably would have been Pat Cummins at the start. And then all of a sudden, you`ve got Nathan Ellis in the mix as well. And I think Nathan Ellis is probably one of our better T20 bowlers and doesn`t really get an opportunity in front of the big three players that we`ve got. So, that`s why Mitchell Marsh is the captain and Pat Cummins is in the T20 line-up.”

Speaking exclusively during Star Sports Press Room, Former Indian cricketer S. Sreesanth shared his thoughts on the Afghanistan team and their performance, said, “The world of cricket loves Afghanistan. A huge thanks to BCCI also for getting them venues like a home team. And the kind of encouragement the Afghanistan team gets is unbelievable. And lots of respect to Rashid Khan. The way that he`s been leading. More like a brotherhood. And it`s so nice to see him literally having a laugh out. And you saw that with those emotions when they were playing. Especially today`s game when they won. It was unbelievable. He spoke about the victory after the game and said thank you to his nation. And what it means not just from the cricketing point of view but from the point of view of life. The inspiration which a lot of Afghans are going to get back home. It`s going to be incredible. And all respect to Jonathan Trott. He`s a great guy. Great coach now. I have never seen him this animated. We could watch Trott literally shouting and screaming. It was so good to see Trott in that role. Afghanistan was executing those plans really well. I think that`s a success for them.”

Speaking exclusively during Star Sports Press Room, Former Australia cricketer Brad Hogg shared his thoughts on what went wrong for Australia against India, said, “I thought they weren`t prepared. This is a worry with Mitchell Starc. If the ball is not swinging, it doesn`t change his length quickly enough. And he didn`t change his length quickly enough to Rohit Sharma as well when he got hit for 29 runs there. And there was one moment where Rohit Sharma came out of the wicket. And then you saw Mitchell Starc turn around. And I don`t know whether he said Rohit`s hitting with the wind or there`s no swing there. That was a moment where I thought Australia were in a lot of trouble. They`re not going to come back because they were starting just to look at what`s going wrong rather than looking for the solutions. So, that`s probably where it went wrong. And also, dropping Hardik Pandya, it was an easy catch there for Mitchell Marsh, the skipper, with a couple of overs to go. And I think Hardik scored 22 off the next 10 balls. You can`t afford to drop Hardik Pandya when you`ve just bought your way back into the game. That was also crucial.”

  • Those who wanted to "weaken" party would not be taken back: Sharad Pawar

The Nationalist Congress Party (SP) Chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday clarified that those who wanted to “weaken” the party would not be taken back, reported the PTI.

Sharad Pawar`s clarification came in the wake of the speculations that some of the MLAs of the Ajit Pawar camp are willing to return to the NCP-led by Sharad Pawar.

However, the veteran NCP leader added that those MLAs who would not “hurt” the image of the party would be taken back, but after having a word with the party leaders and workers, reported PTI.

Addressing the media in Maharashtra`s Mumbai, Sharad Pawar said, “Those who wanted to weaken the party would not be taken in. But those leaders who would help strengthen the organisation and not hurt the image of the party would be taken in,” according to the PTI.

“However, that too will happen after having a word with the party (NCP-SP) leaders and workers”, he added, as reported by the news agency.

Following the Ajit Pawar camp`s poor showing in Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha polls, there is growing speculation that some of the MLAs of the camp are willing to return to the NCP led by Sharad Pawar ahead of the state assembly polls, reported PTI.

The NCP bagged only one of the four seats it contested, whereas the NCP led by Sharad Pawar won eight of the ten seats it contested.

The Mahayuti alliance — Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena and the NCP — collectively bagged 17 seats in Maharashtra with BJP securing nine seats and the Shiv Sena seven.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the NCP led by Ajit Pawar, were reportedly upset over being offered the post of Minister of State (MoS) in the Modi 3.0 cabinet.

NCP leader Praful Patel had been offered the post of MoS, however, he turned it down saying that accepting the position of Minister of State with independent charge in the Union Cabinet would be considered a demotion for him, as he was earlier a Cabinet Minister in the Union Government.

During the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, under the leadership of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Patel was the cabinet minister for the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.

As reported by the PTI, earlier, Ajit Pawar had said that his party is going to wait for the BJP to change its offer to its ally.

  • T20 World Cup 2024 | "Fifties and hundreds don`t matter": Rohit Sharma

During the T20 World Cup 2024 match against Australia, Team India captain Rohit Sharma smashed a blistering 92 runs in just 41 deliveries including 7 fours and 8 sixes. Following his knock, the skipper said, “The fifties and hundreds don`t matter, I wanted to bat with the same tempo and carry on.”

Rohit could have broken the record of the fastest century in the T20 World Cup but fell short by just eight runs. West Indies legend Chris Gayle holds the record for the fastest century in the T20 global showpiece. Gayle scored a century in 47 balls in the T20 World Cup 2016.

Team India will now play the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024 against England on June 27.

“It was a good wicket, and you want to try and back yourself to play those kinds of shots. I`ve been trying to do that for a few years now, and I`m glad it came off today. The fifties and hundreds don`t matter, I wanted to bat with the same tempo and carry on.”

“You want to make big scores, yes, but at the same time you want to make the bowlers think where the next shot is coming, and I think I managed to do that today,” he added.

“You need to put the bowlers under pressure, and you need big scores for that. I tried to access all sides of the field, not just one side.”

Winning was not a `breeze` for India and Rohit said he had to tweak his batting style to take the wind out of the 2021 champions` sails.

Rohit showcased some jaw-dropping strokes in the offside after his fellow teammate Virat Kohli departed for a duck. With wind a perpetual hindrance, Rohit said he had to play more strokes on the offside to negate the impact.

“I thought right from over number one, there was a strong breeze blowing across. They (Australia) changed their plan, bowling against the breeze, so I realised I had to open up the off side as well,” he said.

“You`ve got to factor in the breeze and understand that the bowlers are smart as well and open up all sides of the field. When you keep an open mind and not just think of one shot, you can access all areas of the field,” said the India skipper after the match.

“…when you`re playing on grounds like this where wind is a factor, anything is possible, but I thought we used the conditions very well. It was very pleasing to see how we were getting through those overs and getting the wickets at the same time.”

Rohit also said he knew wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav would be at his potent best in the West Indies after encountering seamer-friendly conditions in the US. Kuldeep repaid his faith with excellent figures of 2/24 in his four overs on Monday.

Also Read: T20 World Cup 2024: The Afghans` superiority

“Kuldeep, we understand the strengths he has, but you have to use it when you need it. The pitches in New York were seamer-friendly, but we knew he would play a big role later.”

Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final match against England, Rohit said that he would like India to continue the same way in the knockouts as well.

“We don`t want to do anything different (in the knockouts). We want to play the same way, understand what the individuals need to do in a given situation, and play freely.

“So far we`ve been doing that consistently, and semifinals, we have to try and do the same thing. It`ll be nice (to play England in the semifinal). Nothing changes for us, we want to focus on what we can do as a team, and take the game on.”

Australian skipper Mitchell Marsh, who was guilty of grassing a sitter and also failed to build on his good start with the bat, conceded that India were better on the day.

“It`s disappointing…today India got the better of us. I think over the course of 40 overs there`s a lot of small margins, but honestly, India were the better team,” he admitted.

“We`ve seen for 15 years what Rohit Sharma can do in that kind of mood, and he got off to an absolute flier. In a run chase like that, you`re in it if you can keep it at tens (10 runs per over) for as long as possible, but India were too good for us.”

  • Sambhajinagar: Man beaten up for talking to woman from different religion

A man was reportedly beaten up by a group of people after he was seen talking to a woman from another community on Tuesday afternoon, police told PTI.

Police registered a case on Tuesday against a man after his female friend was killed when the car she was driving fell into a valley in Maharashtra`s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, an official told PTI.

According to the agency reports, the man had been charged under Indian Penal Code Section 304(A)  for causing death by negligence as he handed over the car keys to the woman without knowing whether she had a driving license or not, the official said.

Reportedly, the incident took place before they registered a police case.

The deceased, identified as Shweta Survase (23), reportedly died on Monday afternoon after she accidentally pressed the accelerator while her car was in reverse gear. Her friend Suraj Mule was shooting her video, a police official told PTI.

  • Maharashtra assembly elections: NCP (SP) urges EC to delist similar symbols

Ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections, the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has requested the Election Commission of India to withdraw or exclude certain symbols which it claimed are “deceptively similar” to the “man playing turha” symbol officially allotted to it, reported the PTI.

The NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) argued that allocating phonetically similar symbols, such as “Trumpet/Tutari,” to Independent candidates has put the party at a significant disadvantage and goes against the principle of creating a level playing field.

According to the PTI, it refuted that allocating the “Trumpet” symbol to Independent candidates was appropriate and cited instances in the recently-held Lok Sabha elections 2024 wherein similar symbols confused voters, affecting the party`s electoral performance in certain constituencies.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had assigned the “man playing turha” symbol to the NCP (SP) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 following a split within the party.

In its plea, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) requested the Election Commission of India to immediately withdraw or exclude the “Turhi/Trumpet/Tutari” symbol from the list of free symbols for the upcoming Assembly elections in Maharashtra, due in October this year, as per the PTI.

The party stressed the importance of upholding the fairness and integrity of the electoral process to ensure free and fair elections.

Citing data from nine Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) emphasised how “deceptive” symbols had led to relatively unknown candidates  gaining a significant number of votes.

In the recent Parliamentary polls, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP bagged 8 of the ten seats it had contested as a Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) constituent in Maharashtra, which sends 48 members to Lok Sabha.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi comprises of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP, Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena and the Congress.

The party cited the example of Independent nominee Sanjay Gade who contested from the Satara seat on the Trumpet symbol and garnered 37,062 votes, which led to the defeat of NCP (SP) candidate Shashikant Shinde by a narrow margin of 32,771 votes.

Shinde bagged 5,38,363 votes against the winning candidate Udayanraje Bhosale of BJP who secured 5,71,134 votes.

  • NCP (SP) targets BJP, claims many `Emergency situations` in country at present

The Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) on Tuesday claimed there are many “Emergency situations” in the country at present and the BJP needs to answer them before dwelling into the past.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress on the 49th anniversary of the Emergency.

The saffron party has announced a nationwide programme on the 1975 Emergency to “expose” the Congress` “authoritarianism” and its disregard for the Constitution.

In a post on X, NCP (SP) spokesperson Clyde Crasto targeted the BJP over the Manipur violence and the alleged NEET paper leak.

“When will the #BJP talk about the Emergency situation in #Manipur where the people are suffering for more than a year. When will the BJP talk about the Emergency situation in our #Education system and their failure in controlling the #NEET paper leaks,” he said.

“When will BJP talk about the Emergency situation on the #Agricultural front in India,” Crasto added.

He claimed the basic demands of farmers in the country were not met.

“When will the BJP talk about the Emergency situation in the #Employment sector where the highest #Unemployment rate has occurred in #India in the past 45 years,” the NCP (SP) leader said.

“There are many such Emergency situations in our country in the present and the BJP needs to answer them, before they dwell into the past,” he said.

On June 25, 1975, the then prime minister Indira Gandhi, a Congress stalwart, imposed Emergency in the country, suspending civil liberties, jailing opposition leaders and dissidents and effecting press censorship.

After 21 months, the Emergency was lifted in 1977.

On the 49th anniversary of Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that its dark days are a reminder of how the Congress subverted basic freedoms and trampled over the Constitution which every Indian respects greatly.

Hitting out at the main opposition party, he said in posts on X that those who imposed the Emergency have no right to profess their love for our Constitution.

PM Modi said, “These are the same people who have imposed Article 356 on innumerable occasions, got a Bill to destroy press freedom, destroyed federalism and violated every aspect of the Constitution.”

“The mindset which led to the imposition of the Emergency is very much alive among the same Party which imposed it. They hide their disdain for the Constitution through their tokenism but the people of India have seen through their antics and that is why they have rejected them time and again,” he said.

Just to cling on to power, the then Congress Government disregarded every democratic principle and turned the nation into a jail, PM Modi said, adding that any person who disagreed with the party was tortured and harassed.

  • T20 WC 2024 | "A lot of credit goes to Jasprit": Arshdeep Singh post win vs AUS

The positive approach that pacer Jasprit Bumrah has in the T20 World Cup 2024 helps the other Indian team bowlers to go for wickets in pressure situations, said young start pacer, Arshdeep Singh.

The 25-year-old left-arm pacer Arshdeep is among the leading wicket-takers in the T20 World Cup 2024. So far, he has bagged 15 wickets in six matches with an average of 11.86 and an economy rate of 7.41 runs per over.

Jasprit Bumrah, on the other hand, has taken 11 wickets in the same number of games, conceding just 4.08 runs per over, a rarity in the shortest format.

“I guess a lot of credit goes to Jasprit because he puts a lot of pressure on the batters. He gives what, three or four runs in and over,” Arshdeep said after securing a 24-run win over Australia in the Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024.

“So, batsmen are coming hard against me and when they are trying, I just have to try and bowl my best ball and there are a lot of chances of getting wickets there because on the other hand, they see the runs are not coming and the asking rate is going high.

Also Read: T20 WC 2024, AFG vs BAN: Afghanistan defeat Bangladesh by 8 runs to reach semifinals

“So, they take more risk against me and there`s a chance always of getting a wicket there. So there`s a lot of credit of my wickets that goes to Jasprit,” he said.

Star spinner Kuldeep Yadav has yet again delivered performances when the team needed it the most. Featuring in just three T20 World Cup 2024 matches, the wrist-spinner has bagged seven wickets.

“Kuldeep is a champion spinner. Whenever he gets a chance, he delivers and he`s always been in the wickets and today as well he was bowling from the tough end and even against the wind, he managed to bowl at around 6 an over and took crucial wickets.

“He is a really important player in our team and we are looking forward to take all from him and we hope he takes a lot of wickets,” said Arshdeep, who had David Warner caught in the slips on Monday.

Team India will clash with England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Thursday. Ahead of the match, the “Men in Blue” will have the last edition`s loss to England in mind.

Asked about his plans for the semifinals, Arshdeep added: “Right now, I`m not expecting anything out of that game, just we`ll have a little celebration after this game and a long travel day ahead. And then we`ll see what conditions there are and how we can do our best there.”

Australia`s star pacer Josh Hazlewood also credited Kuldeep and Bumrah saying that they made the difference.

“I thought the wicket was – a pretty good wicket it was probably a 190-par score and they got the other side of it and we went underneath.

“I thought the chase was well on target for quite a lot of the time there and probably till Kuldeep and Jasprit, their eight overs, probably proved the difference again as they usually”, said Hazlewood.

  • Delhi excise policy case: AAP to move SC against stay on CM kejriwal`s bail

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday said it disagrees with the Delhi High Court order staying the bail granted to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the trial court and will challenge it in the Supreme Court, reported PTI.

Kejriwal was granted bail by the trial court on June 20 in the money laundering case connected to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam. He was ordered to be released on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh.

The high court stayed the trial court order on Tuesday.

As per the PTI report, a vacation bench of Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain said the trial court failed to appreciate the material placed before it by the Enforcement Directorate and did not apply its mind while deciding the AAP leader`s bail plea.

The judge also said the trial court ought to have given adequate opportunity to the agency to argue its case.

Reacting to the development, the AAP said they will approach the apex court.
“We disagree with the Delhi High Court order. We will challenge it in the Supreme Court,” the party said.

Addressing a press conference, Delhi cabinet minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said the AAP`s legal team will decide the future course of action.

“A high court bench stayed the order of the lower court without even the order getting uploaded. I did not have any hope from the high court. I think the high court bench was prejudiced. We will approach the higher court. Our legal team will decide the strategy and the time when we approach the higher court,” he said.

The ED moved the high court the next day of the trial court`s order and contended that it was “perverse”, “one-sided” and “wrong-sided” and that the findings were based on irrelevant facts.

The Delhi excise policy was scrapped in 2022 after the lieutenant governor ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged irregularities and corruption involving its formulation and execution.

According to the CBI and the ED, irregularities were committed while modifying the excise policy and undue favours extended to the licence holders.

Atishi was admitted to the emergency ICU at the Lok Nayak Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday. As per the PTI report, her condition is stable now said the hospital`s Medical Director Dr Suresh Kumar.

Echoing similar sentiments, Sachdeva said the essence of satyagraha is to fight for the truth.

“We`ve been saying since June 21 that you cannot do satyagraha because you have no connection with the truth. From Mahatma Gandhi and Lala Lajpat Rai to Vinoba Bhave and Anna Hazare, satyagrahis fasted to reveal the truth, not to hide their administrative failures, as Atishi intended to do,” he claimed.

  • No leader is with me, I am fighting lonely battle, says Manoj Jarange

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange on Tuesday said that the people from his own community were not with him and he was fighting a lonely battle for quota. Citing the OBC quota protest, Manoj Jarange said, while the OBC leaders were united over the issue of reservation despite belonging to different parties.

He was talking to reporters on Tuesday before being discharged from a private hospital where he was reportedly admitted a few days back, amid the Maratha quota agitation.

As per the PTI report, Manoj Jarange launched his latest round of protest on June 8 and suspended it six days later. He has been demanding implementation of the draft notification that recognises Kunbis as `sage soyare` (blood relatives) of Maratha community members.

Kunbi, an agrarian group, falls under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, and Jarange has been demanding that Kunbi certificates be issued to all Marathas, thus making them eligible for quota benefits.

However, OBC activist Laxman Hake and his supporters have been opposing Jarange`s demand for issuance of Kunbi certificates to the Maratha community. He asserted that the state government must not take any decision that affects OBCs. Hake, who was on a hunger strike over his demand, withdrew it later.

“Yesterday I said I am alone. This means that OBC leaders are united irrespective of their different political parties. But the leaders belonging to my community are not with me. Many of them have stepped aside. But I will still keep fighting,” Manoj Jarange said, reported PTI.

He also appealed to the government to fulfil the demands of the Maratha community, as reported by the news agency.

“The government should meet our `sage soyare` demand as per our definition and just publish a notification that Marathas and Kunbis are one. Even if the government takes the gazettes of Hyderabad, Satara and the Bombay presidency into consideration, the Marathas will get reservation,” Manoj Jarange added.

As reported by PTI, he alleged that people from the Maratha community who fought for the cause of reservation were defamed.

“Earlier, the people who fought for the community and quota were defamed by the government and were pushed aside. But no matter how much they defame us now, we won`t move away from our demands,” he said, reported PTI.

  • CCLs are to be considered differently, says HC while ordering release of minor

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday ordered that a 17-year-old boy allegedly involved in the Pune car crash case last month be released immediately from an observation home, reported the PTI.

The teenage boy, who the police claim was allegedly drunk and driving the luxury car when it hit a two-wheeler in the early hours of May 19 killing two techies, was lodged at an observation home in Pune city Maharashtra.

A division bench of Justices Bharati Dangre and Manjusha Deshpande quashed the orders issued by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) remanding the minor to the observation home.

“We allow the petition and order his release. The CCL (Child in Conflict with Law) shall be in the care and custody of the petitioner (paternal aunt),” the court said, as per the PTI.

The bench noted the JJB`s remand orders were illegal and passed without jurisdiction.

The Bombay High Court said that amid the “immediate reaction to the accident, the kneejerk reaction and the public outcry, the CCL`s age was not considered.”

“The CCL is under 18 years old. His age needs to be considered,” the bench said, the news agency reported.

It said that the court was bound by law, the aims and objectives of the Juvenile Justice Act and must treat him as any child in conflict with law separately from adult, despite the seriousness of the crime.

“CCLs are to be considered differently,” the Bombay High Court said, the PTI reported.

The court said the accused is already under rehabilitation, which is the primary objective, and he is already referred to a psychologist and the same shall be continued.

The order was passed in a plea filed by the 17-year-old boy`s paternal aunt, who claimed he was illegally detained and sought his immediate release.

The accident took place in the early hours of May 19. The boy was granted bail the same day by the JJB and ordered to be under the care and supervision of his parents and grandfather.

The police later filed an application before the JJB, seeking amendment of the bail order.

On May 22, the board ordered the boy to be taken into custody and remanded him to an observation home.

The boy`s aunt in the plea claimed that because of the public uproar coupled with political agenda, the police deviated from the right course of investigation with regard to the minor boy, thus defeating the entire purpose of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act.

  • Students` textbooks should include chapter on it, says Naidu

Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday said that there should be a lesson in textbooks about Emergency in 1975 that tainted the country`s democracy. He said the students should be made aware of how it came to be imposed in the country, reported ANI.

Speaking on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency, Naidu said, “The Emergency has put a taint on the country`s democracy. There should be a lesson in the textbooks for all the students about what was and how it was imposed. Students should know that an emergency was imposed and how lakhs of people were arrested,” as reported by ANI.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi in sharp criticism of the Congress had reportedly said that the dark days of the Emergency are a reminder of how the Congress Party trampled over the Constitution of India.

“Today is a day to pay homage to all those great men and women who resisted the emergency. The Dark Days of Emergency remind us of how the Congress Party subverted basic freedoms and trampled over the Constitution of India, which every Indian respects greatly,” PM Modi wrote on X.

Today is a day to pay homage to all those great men and women who resisted the Emergency.

The #DarkDaysOfEmergency remind us of how the Congress Party subverted basic freedoms and trampled over the Constitution of India which every Indian respects greatly.

    — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) June 25, 2024

He further wrote that just to cling on to power, the then Congress government disregarded every democratic principle.

“Just to cling on to power, the then Congress government disregarded every democratic principle and made the nation into a jail. Any person who disagreed with Congress was tortured and harassed. Socially regressive policies were unleashed to target the weakest sections” the prime minister added.

Hitting out at the main opposition party, he added in posts on X that those who imposed the Emergency have no right to profess their love for our Constitution.

He wrote, “These are the same people who have imposed Article 356 on innumerable occasions, got a Bill to destroy press freedom, destroyed federalism and violated every aspect of the Constitution.”

As per the news agency report, BJP top leaders like JP Naddam Rajnath Singh, Jaishankar also launched a scathing attack on Congress over the emergency period.

The Emergency, which is reportedly considered to be one of the most controversial periods of independent India`s history, was imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from June 25, 1975, to 1977.

There were political arrests, mass forced sterilisation and beautification drives among others during the period, reported ANI.

All key opposition leaders at the time, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani, and Jay Prakash Narayanan, among others, were either jailed or placed under detention.

  • Maharashtra: 30-foot-long whale carcass washes ashore in Virar

A 30-ft long whale carcass, weighing in tonnes, washed ashore near Arnala Fort in Virar West on Monday. The concerned authorities have been informed but the government machinery is struggling to reach there with a machine to dispose of the marine giant.

The carcass is found near Channel Gate, north of the Fort, which is nearly 700-M away from Arnala Killa village in Virar. “The dead whale got washed ashore after it was tossed in the high tide on Monday. Now it’s stuck at a place where the authorities concerned will have a tough time getting a machine to transport the bulky carcass to a place to dispose of it,” said a local source.

Local fishermen suspect that the fully aquatic open-ocean endangered mammal might have got injured by a multi-deck cruise in the deep sea or have died of sea pollution. “The death cause of this marine giant can be ascertained only after medical examination. But it has been lying unattended since Monday and the local residents of Virar and nearby villages are walking to see the large carcass of the whale,” said a source from Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) in Vasai Taluka.

“The concerned authorities including the forest and revenue officials have been informed. The local residents, who seem to be eager to take selfies with the carcass, have been suggested not to reach closer to the dead whale as the chances for its explosion can’t be ruled out,” said a local source.

A forest official said, “We have been informed about the whale carcass found near Arnala Fort. It’s around 30-ft long, so we will have to take the help of large boats to pull it to a place where we can easily dispose of the marine giant’s carcass.”

In September 2021, a large carcass of a whale was found near Bhuigaon beach in Vasai and the authorities had to use two excavators to dig the seabed to dispose of the bulky carcass of the marine mammal.

  • `State govt should enact a law similar to adopted by Centre to curb paper leaks`

Amid the row over NEET and UGC NET examinations, Nationalist Congress Party leader (Sharad Chandra Pawar faction) Rohit Pawar-led delegation held a meeting with Governor Ramesh Bais on Monday and demanded that the Maharashtra government enact a law similar to the one adopted by the Centre to curb paper leaks in Maharashtra, reported news agency ANI.

Furthermore, Rohit Pawar called the meeting a `positive discussion` and informed that Governor has assured actions on those issues.

Addressing the media, Rohit Pawar said, “We met the Governor, and several issues were discussed. We have tried many times to bring the law passed by the central government regarding paper leaks into the state. We have also raised the issue of the drug racket at Pune University,” reported ANI.

On the issue of paper-leak, Rohit Pawar said, “We have talked to governor about the issue of paper leaks. Earlier, Uttarakhand governor had taken measures concerning the paper-leaks and brought anti-paper leak laws. Similarly, we have pledged to the governor to take measures and bring anti-paper leak law to address this issue,” reported ANI.

Speaking about the discrepancies noticed at Savitribai Phule University, Rohit Pawar stated, “The state government is ignoring the issues of frequent paper leaks in Maharashtra and malpractices in the recruitment of vacancies in Savitribai Phule Pune University. If the government is neglecting, then one can go to the governor and ask for complaint. Accordingly, we met Ramesh Ji Bais Saheb and gave him a letter in this regard. The Governor also gave a positive response in this regard,” reported ANI.

He also urged the governor to shift his attention on the MIDC issue of his constituency and stated, “The issue of MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) was also mentioned and the governor was requested to handle the matter,” reported ANI.

Highlighting the issue of drug-racket at Pune University, he asserted, “We have requested the governor to pay attention to the issues of Savitribai Phule University. The consumption of drugs and alcohol among students have significantly increased in the university. Upon investigation, drugs worth thousands of crores can be found in Maharashtra,” reported ANI.

Concluding the address, he said, “Overall, it was a positive discussion and he has promised he will talk to the government on these issues,” reported ANI.

Earlier, on June 9, NCP-SCP leader Rohit Pawar said that Ajit Pawar has lost his utility to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“I think BJP wants to give them a message that they did not benefit from them (NCP) in the Lok Sabha. They thought that by favouring Ajit Pawar, Sharad Pawar`s power will be curtailed. But that has proved wrong. People have supported Sharad Pawar and given him strength. So Ajit Pawar has lost his utility to the BJP,” Rohit Pawar said speaking to ANI on Sunday.

“In future, Ajit Pawar and his companions may have to fight elections under the BJP`s symbol,” he warned.

Rohit Pawar even said that people who join hands with the BJP have got their “power” reduced.

“Those who side with the BJP get their powers reduced and Ajit Dada`s power has reduced as well. People have also shown them that,” Pawar told ANI.

The Ajit Pawar-led NCP won one seat in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls.

“The people who are jumping unnecessarily after winning 99 seats, need to understand that their combined total seats in the last three elections stand less than the BJP`s seats in 2024. Count their 99 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, count their 56 seats of 2019, and add their 42 seats in 2014, even after this they have got less than 240 seats,” Scindia told ANI.

He further praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said that PM Modi had set an “unprecedented benchmark.”

“This is the first time in 75 years that something like this has happened. PM Narendra Modi has set an unprecedented benchmark… We have full faith that India will further grow on the global stage under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi,” he added.

  • Nandini milk price goes up by Rs 2 from June 26

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) on Tuesday announced a hike in milk prices with effect from June 26, reported the PTI.

The KMF also said that it would be enhancing the quantity of milk in its half and one litre packets by 50 ml.

The development comes days after the Karnataka government hiked sales tax on fuel, following which petrol prices have gone up by Rs 3 per litre and diesel by Rs 3.5 per litre in the state.

“As it is the current harvest season, the storage of milk in all district milk unions is increasing every day and the current storage is close to one crore litres. In this background, the price of each packet is being increased by Rs 2 with an additional 50 ml of milk being given to the consumers only for each half liter (500ML) and one liter (1000ML) packets,” KMF said in a statement, according to the PTI.

Currently, the 500 ml toned milk packet of Nandini costs Rs 22. With this hike, the 550 ml packet will now cost Rs 24. Similarly, the 1000 ml (1 litre) packet was priced at Rs 42 and will now be sold as 1,050 ml at Rs 44, as per the news agency.

Similarly, prices will go up for other categories of milk under Nandini brand.

“In the dairy industry, Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers Mahamandal (federation) is the second largest Mahamandal in the country… KMF has been procuring and processing milk from more than 27 lakh dairy farmers of the state through its member milk unions for the past five decades and has been introducing a variety of superior quality milk and milk products under the brand name `Nandini`,” it stated, the PTI reported.

Amul milk price hiked by Rs 2/litre across all variants with effect from June 3

Meanwhile, earlier this month, the price of Amul milk across all variants was hiked by Rs 2 per litre with effect from June 3 in view of the increase in the overall cost of operation and production of milk, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) had earlier said.

The last time GCMMF had raised the milk price was in February 2023. The hike is necessitated to compensate farmers for their increased cost of production, Mehta said.

With the fresh hike, the revised milk prices for variants such as 500 ml Amul buffalo milk, 500 ml Amul Gold milk, and 500 ml Amul Shakti milk stand at Rs 36, Rs 33, and Rs 30, respectively.

  • Pune bar case: Cops detain 2 people from Mumbai for alleged use of drugs

The Pune police have detained two people from Mumbai accused of the alleged use of drugs at a bar, a top official told PTI on Tuesday.

The detained duo was reportedly seen with a substance similar to drugs in a video that went viral earlier, he said.

Pubs in the state`s second-largest city were noticed after the video, allegedly from a bar on Pune`s Fergusson College Road called Liquid Leisure Lounge or L3, showed some youths with some drug-like substances, reported PTI.

According to the news agency report, the police said the bar was operating until 5 am on Sunday, and liquor was being sold beyond the permissible time limit. Reportedly, bars and pubs in Pune are allowed to remain open until 1.30 am.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar told PTI, “We have detained from Mumbai a total of two persons who were seen in the viral video with the drug-like substance.”

Earlier, the police reportedly arrested eight people in connection with the Pune bar case, including an event organizer, and suspended four police personnel after the L3 bar was found operating beyond the permissible time limit. Besides, the excise department has arrested six waiters at L3 for allegedly flouting norms related to the serving of liquor and its stock, as reported by PTI.

The police have collected samples from the toilet in L3 and sent them for an examination to check for the presence of a narcotic substance.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde spoke to Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Monday and directed him to initiate strict action against illegal pubs and bulldoze all structures flouting building rules, reported news agency PTI.

A statement from the Chief Minister`s Office (CMO) in Mumbai said Shinde directed the police to initiate renewed action against peddlers to make Pune a drug-free city and use bulldozers against illegal structures linked to narcotic substances, reported PTI. The statement was released in the wake of the Pune bar case.

“Strict action should be taken against illegal pubs to make Pune city drug-free. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has given instructions to Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar that bulldozers should be moved on illegal constructions related to drugs,” said the CMO statement, reported PTI.

The CM directed officials to initiate action against drug sellers and demolish illegal pubs and structures that flout building rules.

  • London-bound Air India flight receives bomb threat, suspect apprehended

A London-bound Air India flight received a bomb threat on Tuesday but it turned out to be a hoax and a 29 year-old man suspected of making the threatening call has been apprehended here by authorities, an official said.

Security personnel conducted extensive checks on the aircraft and found no danger, allowing the flight to proceed as planned, a Cochin International Airport spokesperson said in a statement here.

According to him, a bomb threat call was received by the Air India call center in Mumbai early on Tuesday for flight AI 149, scheduled to fly from Cochin to London Gatwick.

The alert was promptly communicated to Air India here and the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) at 1.22 AM.

Following established protocols, a Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) was immediately convened at CIAL.

The threat was assessed and declared specific.

Following this, thorough security checks were conducted by the Airport Security Group (ASG-CISF), airline security personnel, and inline baggage screening systems.

In accordance with the recommendations from the Cochin Airport BTAC, the aircraft was moved to an isolated aircraft parking point, and comprehensive security measures were undertaken.

The aircraft was thoroughly checked and subsequently cleared for flight.

The check-in process for AI 149 was completed by 10:30 am. The flight left for its destination at 1.25 PM.

It was originally scheduled to depart at 11.50 AM on Tuesday.

Efforts were made to identify the caller who reported the threat to the Mumbai call center.

Investigations revealed the call was made by Suhaib (29), a native of Kondotty in Malappuram district, who was scheduled to travel to London on the AI 149 flight.

Suhaib, along with his wife and daughter, was intercepted by ASG at Cochin Airport`s international departure terminal during check-in.

“He has since been handed over to the police for further questioning and legal action,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

  • Amarnath yatra: High-end CCTVs installed to monitor traffic on J-K highway

Ahead of the beginning of the annual Amarnath yatra, high-end CCTV cameras have been installed along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway to monitor both pilgrimage and regular vehicular traffic, officials said on Tuesday.

The traffic department has installed 10 360-degree CCTV cameras from Udhampur to Banihal in Ramban district, while the police department has placed 60 cameras along the highway to monitor vehicular movement and identify suspicious individuals, they said.

The 52-day pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine in south Kashmir is set to start on June 29 and conclude on August 19, as announced by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

“We have installed 10 high-end CCTV cameras at various key points from Udhampur to Banihal to monitor traffic,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic National Highway, Rohit Baskotra, told PTI.

These cameras are positioned at locations, including the Jakhani area of Udhampur, Dalwas, Khoni Nallah, Mehar, Battery Cheshma, Nachlana, Banihal Chowk, Tunnel-5, Shaligadi and Cutpoint, he said.

A control room has been established in Ramban to oversee traffic movement around the clock, Baskotra said.

“The control room monitors the highway 24/7, enhancing our efficiency in managing congestion, traffic jams, and other issues,” the SSP said.

The cameras are strategically placed at points where traffic conditions are particularly problematic and accidents are frequent, he added.

The traffic police have also issued an advisory for drivers on the highway during the Amarnath yatra, emphasising lane driving and warning of heavy fines for traffic violations. Contact numbers for technical support are also provided in case of vehicle breakdowns.

“With the CCTV cameras, if a vehicle breaks down or a traffic jam occurs, it will be visible in the control room, allowing a police team to quickly respond,” Baskotra said.

Special preparations have been made by the traffic police of Ramban and Udhampur to ensure smooth traffic flow on the national highway, a significant challenge during the pilgrimage period, he said.

  • Arunachal Pradesh: Heavy rain lashes Leparada district

Heavy rains lashed Arunachal Pradesh`s Leparada district and several acres of crops have been submerged by water, an official said on Tuesday, reported the PTI.

According to the PTI, a landslide triggered by heavy rain blocked the Aalo-Pangin Pasighat road in Siang district, the officials said.

Leparada District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) T Pema said that the officials of the district administration are assessing the situation, arising out of continuous downpour, the news agency reported on Tuesday.

She said that officials are visiting wet rice cultivation fields submerged by water following heavy downpour.

The DDMO appealed to people living near river banks, and landslide-prone zones to move to safer locations.

“We are keeping a strict vigil in the flooded areas”, she added, as per the PTI.

A landslide disrupted road communication in Siang district near Yeksing, blocking the Aalo-Pangin-Pasighat road.

Several commercial and private vehicles are stranded on both sides of the highway, as a huge pile of debris blocked the road, officials said.

Odisha govt asks collectors to remain prepared for possible flood situation

Meanwhile, the Odisha government has asked all district collectors and municipal commissioners to remain fully prepared for probable flood situation in the monsoon season, according to the PTI.

In a letter to all collectors and municipal commissioners, Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu on Monday said IMD has forecasted that an intense spell of rainfall due to active monsoon would occur throughout the state from June 26.

“As a result, there may be instances of flash floods, flood like situation, waterlogging and landslides at different locations. Keeping this in mind, you are requested to take immediate action,” Sahu told the collectors.

He said the field-level functionaries should not leave the headquarters and they should be deployed in strategic locations of flash flood or waterlogging and ready to meet any eventuality.

As low-lying areas in urban pockets may have waterlogging and roads may be submerged, the SRC directed the urban local bodies (ULBs) to keep the drains and storm water channels decongested and deploy adequate dewatering pumps.

In case of very heavy rain, movement of vehicles on submerged roads should be regulated and people in low-lying areas may be shifted to safer locations temporarily, he advised.

The SRC also asked for pre-positioning of water pumps with generators in low-lying areas susceptible to waterlogging.

“Ensure supervision of weak and vulnerable points in river and canal embankments. Flood fighting materials may be pre-positioned at such places. Drainage clearance must be ensured for free flow of rainwater,” he directed.

According to IMD Bhubaneswar Centre`s bulletin, heavy rainfall is expected in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Kalahandi and Koraput on June 26.

Some places of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar districts would also experience thunderstorm and lightning on Wednesday, it said.

  • Will support govt`s choice if Dy speaker post given to oppn, says Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the opposition will support the government on the Lok Sabha Speaker`s choice if the convention is followed and the deputy speaker`s post is given to the opposition bloc.

He also said that Defence Minister and senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh was yet to get back to them on the opposition`s demand for the deputy speaker`s post.

Rahul Gandhi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants constructive cooperation but has not returned party president Mallikarjun Kharge`s call on the demand, as promised, which amounts to an insult.

Further, detailing talks that happened between Rajnath Singh and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul also alleged that Opposition leaders are getting “insulted”.

“Today it is written in the newspaper that PM Modi has said that the Opposition should cooperate with the government constructively. Rajnath Singh called Mallikarjun Kharge and he asked him to extend support to the Speaker. The entire Opposition said that we would support the speaker, but the convention is that the Deputy Speaker post should be given to the opposition. Rajnath Singh said that he would call back Mallikarjun Kharge but he has not done that yet…PM Modi is asking for cooperation from Opposition but our leader is getting insulted,” said Rahul Gandhi.

  • Mumbai: From dusk to desk

Chasing away the proverbial Monday morning blues, the opening of an Evening Learning Centre (ELC) in Sion yesterday morning offered a ray of hope and was a small but significant shout-out for educational equality and inclusivity for the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ) community. This centre, opened by Deutsche Bank as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative and Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Masoom, which works in the space of empowering, transforming and strengthening the night school system,  offers educational support to sexual minorities, to help them finish their Std X (SSC) and National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) examination. The term sexual minorities broadly is used to refer to lesbian, gay, bisexual or non-heterosexual individuals. It can also refer to transgender, non-binary or intersex individuals.

    History made

The inaugural event started with a speaker from the sexual minorities community, Praveen S who said, “I want to thank those responsible for creating this space for us. I use the pronouns he/she/they so I identify as non-binary and represent the LGBTQ community. While such opportunities bring us some cheer, we must remember that as a community, we are still very far from the mainstream.”

Swara, Jhanvi and Urmi at the inauguration

History is not always made by some epochal, earth-shaking happenings, or pronouncements with immortal speeches by world leaders. It is also made in classrooms, with mere mortals present there, amidst honking traffic and the routine of daily life going by like it happened yesterday. “This is a historical moment,” said Nikita Ketkar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Masoom, and added, “This is in line with our vision of strengthening the night school movement. If this ELC model is successful, we can replicate it across India.”

Kaushik Shaparia, CEO, of Deutsche Bank Group India, said, “We do business but we also give back to society. We focus on the four Es: Education, Environment, Employment and Enterprise. Here, with the opening of this centre, the focus is on education which will lead to employment. We will have a second centre up soon and a third one is coming up in Pune.”

    Fearless, forthright

Three students representing the sexual minorities community spoke candidly on the occasion and their bravery touched the heart. Student ‘Swara’ who had finished her Std X earlier and is employed told her community who was in the audience, “I advise you to attend classes and study. Get ahead in life. Do not miss out on Sunday classes, especially.” Jhanvi from the sexual minority community said, “I studied till the eighth standard. Then a family member did something wrong to me, I fell apart mentally, and I could not complete my studies. It is NGOs like Humsafar who taught me how to live and NGO Gaurav who held my finger and taught me how to walk. I will pass my X and XII exams too,” said Jhanvi determinedly as applause rang out at her resilience.

    Nikita Ketkar and Kaushik Shaparia

It was Urmi, a transgender activist, who shattered stereotypes as she spoke out strongly. Urmi who is employed, said, “We are stereotyped as a community who does not work, likes to get money by begging, does not bother to get an education. Amongst all the barriers that we have to overcome, there is the mental harassment aspect too. A lot of kids from the community are harassed in childhood in their schools. That haunts them and is one of the reasons so many do not finish school, they drop out mid-way. I was assaulted in the school washroom when I was in the seventh standard. In fact, why look outside? Family members have also raped sexual minority members within their family. This happens, it is a fact. These experiences the horror and trauma, stay with us, and are one of the reasons, that may see us opt out of the academic system and never go back. Centres like these, with their wonderful staffers, need to look at the backstory too of the students. This should also serve as an eye-opener for all those who ask why we do not study and earn money through employment and prefer to beg. This may not be true for everybody, nor is it the sole factor, but it is certainly true for many in the community. Mental health problems as a result of sexual assaults are definitely one contributing factor for the high dropout rates.”

Post Urmi’s upfront speech Shaparia suggested that this ELC should think about employing a counsellor at the classes, as the inauguration wrapped up. A night school transformation programme helps reintegrate adults who have dropped out of school for different reasons into a formal education system, improving their employment prospects and general standard of living.

  • PCB set for overhaul; code of conduct for Pak players after chaotic T20 WC campa

Pakistan’s shambolic T20 World Cup campaign in the USA is all set to trigger a churning in the country’s cricket board and lead to the formulation of a code of conduct for players, who are drawing criticism for taking their families along and making paid appearances at promotional events during the tournament.

A source in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is livid with the performance of some senior officials and held them responsible for the indiscipline prevailing in the team, which could not go beyond the league stage. “You can expect the PCB to lose senior management level officials and also enforce some strict policies for the players in future,” the source said.

He said a policy decision on players not being allowed to have their families in ICC and other major events is also expected to be announced soon by the PCB as part of its clean-up operation. “The fact that so many players not only took their wives and children to the World Cup even had their parents, brothers, etc staying in the team hotel has left the chairman unhappy,” the source said.

He said when inquiries were made as to who gave permission for players to take all their family members on tour, it came to light that some senior officials in the board were behind this decision. “Some of these officials are not professionals, but fans of the players and have given them lot of concessions which eventually led to the World Cup debacle,” the source said.

  • T20 WC 2024 | "It’s on me to look after my own game": Buttler post USA`s match

England captain Jos Buttler, who played a whirlwind 38-ball 83-run knock, on Sunday said he pressed the accelerator button while chasing a modest 116-run target to give themselves a chance to top the Super Eights Group 2 en route to the semi-finals of T20 World Cup. Pacer Chris Jordan (4-10) grabbed a sensational hat-trick in his birthplace before Buttler’s blitzkrieg as England stormed into the semi-finals with a 10-wicket mauling of USA.

‘We give USA a lot of respect’

“We give USA a lot of respect and we talked about if, if we brought our intensity, we would be too good. Once we got in a few overs, we tried to target this side with the wind,” Buttler said. Buttler praised leg-spinner Adil Rashid (2-13) and Liam Livingstone (1-24) for their efforts with the ball. “Adil was fantastic and Livi bowled brilliantly in tandem, it’s difficult when you are not bowling in one game and then suddenly you bowl four overs, credit to him for being ready.”

The England skipper also lauded the effort of comeback man Jordan, who mopped up the USA tail by claiming four wickets in five balls, including the hat-trick, in the 19th over as the Americans folded for 115 in 18.5 overs. “We have great options, today we wanted to bring in CJ [Chris Jordan] to bring depth to our batting, and a World Cup hat-trick is a great effort. I have been feeling good all year to be honest. “I feel I’m hitting the ball well, and it’s on me to look after my own game, as much as I’m the captain, I’m one of the 11 and I have got to do my job,” he said.

USA take away heaps of learnings: Corey

Their fairytale run was cut short by the “Big Boys” but USA batter Corey Anderson says his assorted team is signing off with its head held high and “heaps of learnings”. The USA were knocked out after losing their Super 8 stage matches to South Africa, West Indies and England. This was after a reasonably good run in the group league encounters, during which they beat Pakistan and gave India a scare. “I mean sky’s the limit really… the last few years there’s always been whispers around what’s happening in America with cricket… hopefully, in years to come as well, we can kind of grow that,” Anderson, who is from New Zealand and even played 93 games for the Kiwis.

  • Mumbai: Mandal demands that Sion bridge be opened for Ganesh processions

The Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav Samiti is demanding access to the road over bridge at Sion for vehicles in the procession of Ganesh idols heading for immersion. As the Sion road over bridge has been closed for heavy vehicles, the committee will be raising this issue and other matters related to the celebration of Ganesh festival in the city with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and BMC officials.

President of the committee advocate Naresh Dahibawkar said during the discussion the members also raised concern about the roads which have been temporarily repaired by the BMC. “We have decided to raise these issues with the CM Shinde and BMC officials,” said Dahibawkar. Large number of Ganesh utsav mandals and families use Sion road over bridge on the day of immersion. “If the bridge is closed for heavy vehicles, it will create difficulties for the Ganesh devotees during the immersion process. For the same reason, we have also decided to demand access to Gokhale Bridge at Andheri,” he said.

The Sion road over bridge has been shut for heavy traffic by the Central Railway since June 21, 2024 as the bridge is old and supposed to be reconstructed. The IIT bridge audit report of Sion road over bridge had sounded an alert about the dilapidated condition of the bridge as early as 2020 stating that continuing to keep the bridge over railway lines is extremely dangerous as its lifespan has expired.

The final plan to demolish the bridge and upgrade it had been worked out by Jan 20, 2024 but then local MP Rahul Shewale had stopped the work multiple times. Shewale claimed that locals should be taken into confidence and that he will take up the issue with the CM. Local residents have claimed that the bridge is the only way for students to reach school.

According to the civic records, of the 371 km of roads taken up for concretion by the BMC in January 2023, work on 93 km of roads has been completed. BMC claims that roads which are yet to be concreted are in a good condition to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.

  • Mumbai: Rs 3 crore fine for fruit market on playground

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed a fine of Rs 3.07 crore on Apna Fruit Market, which has allegedly been set up on a plot reserved for a playground off Link Road at Shimpoli near Chikuwadi in Borivli West. The action by R Central ward office comes following a complaint by advocate Mukesh Gupta who had urged the civic body to impose a fine on the plot owner or occupier or vendors who had set up wholesale and retail fruit stalls on a reserved playground plot.

Last year, mid-day had reported about a letter sent by two state cabinet members—Sanjay Bansode, minister for sports and youth welfare, and Aditi Tatkare, who holds the women and child development portfolio—to the BMC administration asking for removal of the encroachment and that the ground be used for its intended purpose. After mid-day’s report, Gupta wrote a letter to the BMC administration asking the civic officials to recover revenue loss that the corporation has incurred due to the ongoing fruit market business on the plot.

On June 21, the R Central ward office issued a notice to the owner/occupier of the plot

Gupta`s letter stated that in 2016, permission from BMC was sought to construct a temporary structure on the plot to hold a fruit exhibition. “While permission was given for the temporary structure, the setup was never dismantled and the fruit vendors continued their business for over seven years,” Gupta said. Citing revenue loss to the civic administration, Gupta demanded that the BMC should not only recover the revenue loss it has incurred for over seven years but even levy a penalty on those running the business.

After pursuing the case for several months, on June 21, based on the instructions of the Deputy Municipal Commissioner Bhagyashree Kapse, the local ward office (R Central) issued a notice to the owner/occupier of the plot to pay a penalty of Rs 3.07 crore within seven days of receipt of the notice. “The owner/occupier is hereby instructed to pay a fine within seven days from receipt of this letter failing which further necessary action will be initiated,” the notice reads. mid-day is in possession of the notice issued by the BMC.

In September 2023, BMC had issued a speaking order stating that documents submitted by owner/occupier were not satisfactory and could not be considered as proof/documentary evidence to prove the authentication of the structures. “Structures are not authorised or approved by the competent authority of the BMC. Hence, you (owner /occupier) are directed to remove the structures within 24 hours from the date of receipt of this speaking order. Failing which the same will be demolished by the BMC at your (owner/occupier) risk and cost (sic),” the notice further read.

    ‘Will legally contest notice’

Irked with the notice, the owner of the plot, Rita Dadarkar, spoke about legally contesting the notice and alleged that the BMC is mired in corruption and her case is no different. Further, questioning the BMC for not seeking any response earlier in these six to seven years, Dadarkar said, “Were BMC officials sleeping for all these years? BMC never issued a notice for collection of any charges for structures or even any reminders for recovery of dues . All of sudden, one morning, Civic authorities woke up and sent a notice for recovery of R3.07 crore. How does the civic body know what structures existed in 2016? Do they have any proof for the same?”

    Official Speak

Sandhya Nandedkar, assistant commissioner, R Central ward, confirmed that the recovery notice had been issued to the owner/occupier of the fruit market. “A recovery notice has been issued. If the amount mentioned in the notice is not paid, it will be sent to the assessment department for addition of the same.”

  • T20 WC 2024: Rohit Sharma`s stellar 92-run knock helps IND post 205 vs AUS

Batting like a man possessed, Rohit Sharma pulverised Australia at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on Monday. Taking a special shine to Mitchell Starc, whom he clobbered for four sixes in the third over of the game, India’s inspirational captain breezed for the fastest fifty of this T20 World Cup, in just 19 deliveries, in a crucial Super Eight game—more crucial for the Aussies.

Riding on the skipper’s magnificent 41-ball 92 and making light of Virat Kohli’s second duck of the competition, India turned in a powerhouse batting performance on being asked to set a target by Mitchell Marsh, blazing to 205 for five at the end of their innings. Given the muscle in the ranks, 15 sixes in 20 overs on an excellent batting surface was hardly a surprise, nor was the ferocity with which Rohit came at the Aussies.

Having warmed up with a wristed flick off Starc wide of mid-on, Rohit played several delectable strokes, none more pleasing than a glorious drive over cover off Marcus Stoinis that kept going and going. There were also proper mows, including a slog-sweep off Pat Cummins’ first ball, India making 60 in the Powerplay, bringing up their 100 in the ninth over and only slowing down towards the end when they realised 91 in the last ten overs. Josh Hazlewood was stunning for the Aussies, finishing with unbelievable figures of one for 14.

    Brief scores
    India 205-5 in 20 overs (R Sharma 92, S Yadav 31, S Dube 28; M Starc 2-45) v Australia (scores incomplete)

  • Finger found in ice cream: blood test clears operator of disease

The blood report of the fruit feeder machine operator at Natural Dairy Company in Indapur, whose finger was allegedly severed and later found in a Yummo ice cream cone in Malad, has shown no signs of any disease. The Malad police collected blood samples from all fruit feeder operators on Saturday and sent them for medical examination to determine if any major diseases were present. On Monday, the police received the blood test results, which confirmed that the operator has no disease, providing major relief to the investigation team.

“There was no blood in the severed finger piece recovered from the ice cream cone. If the blood sample had matched, it could have easily confirmed that the severed finger belonged to the fruit feeder machine operator. We are now waiting for the DNA report,” said an officer from Malad police station. The blood test results, revealing no serious illness, have provided some reassurance. The investigation so far indicates that this was an accident. Once the DNA report is available, the investigation will focus on determining accountability for the accident, and appropriate action will be taken against the responsible party, the officer added.

A human finger digit was found in a Yummo ice cream cone purchased in Malad, prompting an investigation by the Malad police at Fortune Dairy in Indapur (Pune). Several teams were formed, and it was discovered that an accident had occurred on the day the cone was manufactured. Omkar Pote, 24, an assistant packing manager at the company, severed his middle finger while working on the fruit feeder machine. The machine used to crush ingredients such as cashews, almonds and pistachios for ice cream malfunctioned, and the lid of the ingredient container fell inside. Pote’s finger was cut while attempting to retrieve it. The machine was immediately shut down, and Pote was taken to the hospital.

  • `Those who imposed Emergency have no right to profess love for Constitution`

On the 1975 Emergency anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said that its dark days are a reminder of how the Congress subverted basic freedoms and trampled over the Constitution which every Indian respects greatly.

“Socially regressive policies were unleashed to target the weakest sections,” he said.

On June 25, 1975, the then prime minister Indira Gandhi, a Congress stalwart, imposed an Emergency in the country, suspending civil liberties, jailing opposition leaders and dissidents and effecting press censorship.

The prime minister said the anniversary on Tuesday is a day to pay homage to all those great men and women who resisted the Emergency.

The first day of the 18th Lok Sabha on Monday witnessed a war of words between Prime Minister Modi and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge over the imposition of Emergency.

The BJP launched a sharp attack on the Congress on the 1975 Emergency anniversary, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah saying it is the biggest example of the opposition party`s long history of killing democracy and harming it repeatedly.

BJP president J P Nadda said on `X` that those who claim to be the guardians of Indian democracy today had spared no efforts to suppress the voices raised in the defence of constitutional values.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the Emergency, imposed by the then-prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 before she lifted it in 1977 and called for elections, is a black chapter in Indian democracy which cannot be forgotten.

Dictatorship and misuse of power were on brazen display during the period, Singh said on `X`, adding that it raises a big question mark on the commitment to democracy of several political parties.

The BJP`s trenchant criticism of the Congress came amid a coordinated campaign by opposition parties to paint the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as working against the Constitution.

  • Nagpur airport gets bomb threat email; nothing suspicious found after search

The officials said that the Nagpur airport was on Monday thoroughly searched by security personnel after authorities received a bomb threat via an email, but nothing suspicious was discovered in the premises, reported news agency PTI.

This was the third bomb threat message received at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport since April.

When contacted, a senior Nagpur airport official told PTI that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) received an email about a pipe bomb being planted in the aerodrome`s toilet.

Content of the email was communicated to Nagpur airport authorities in the morning. Security personnel thoroughly checked the airport complex, but did not discover any suspicious items, he told PTI.

Security has been stepped up at the airport.

On June 18, Nagpur was among more than 40 cities whose airports had received hoax bomb threat emails. The Nagpur airport had got a similar bomb threat in April too, which turned out to be a hoax.

Last week, Delhi, Jaipur, Vadodara, Chennai and Patna airports received hoax bomb threats via email. Additionally, in Jaipur a private college too received a hoax threat email.

Forty-one airports, including in Varanasi, Chennai, Patna and Jaipur, received bomb threat emails on Tuesday, prompting authorities to scramble contingency measures and carry out anti-sabotage checks that lasted hours, and each of them was found to be a hoax, official sources told PTI.

Security was beefed up as agencies swept the airport terminals after the emails were received around 12.40 pm, reported PTI.

The airports in Varanasi, Chennai, Patna, Nagpur, Jaipur, Vadodara, Coimbatore and Jabalpur were among those that received the hoax threats.

Meanwhile, a Mumbai-bound IndiGo flight from Chennai received a bomb threat message on Tuesday, but it landed safely in Mumbai, an airport source told PTI.

The bomb threat message was received at the private airline`s call centre in New Delhi, the source told PTI.

The flight landed safely at the Mumbai airport at 10.30 pm, he said.

“IndiGo flight 6E 5149, operating from Chennai to Mumbai, had received a bomb threat. Upon landing in Mumbai, the crew followed protocol and the aircraft was taken to an isolation bay,” the airline said in a statement, reported PTI.

All passengers have safely disembarked the aircraft, IndiGo said.

“We are working with security agencies and post completion of all security checks, the aircraft will be positioned back in the terminal area,” it added, reported PTI.

    Your time is up

On a Friday night, when this diarist and a companion dropped by The Tasting Room by Diva in Raghuvanshi Mills, the much-hyped European restaurant with a menu designed by celebrated chef Ritu Dalmia, we didn’t realise that we’d be leaving with a rushed aftertaste; and no, this wasn’t even about the food.

Guests at the restaurant. REPRESENTATIVE PIC COURTESY/INSTAGRAM

We walked in at 9.50 pm, and were informed by a Sad Sack-like attendant that 11 pm was closing time. We had over an hour for a glass of wine and a quick bite. Unknown to us, a timer had been set. We were hurried to place our orders, including the last course (“what about dessert; the kitchen will close…?”) by Sad Sack.

By the time we gobbled down a plate of soft-shell tacos and a glass of Hungarian pinot, we were already feeling like we were under threat from a possible White Walkers’ attack. At 10.35 pm, the air-con was switched off. Pearls of sweat began to roll down our forehead. Lights on at 12.30 am at a dive — we have heard. AC off at a fancy fine dine to shoo away guests?

We asked Sad Sack, “Wasn’t it 11 pm, you said?” “It’s 10.30 pm. We close the doors at 11 pm.” The bill arrived at 10.45 pm while we hurriedly swallowed an okay-ish roast chicken (perhaps, the cooking time was tweaked too?), and were sent off into the humid night down Lower Parel with a fancy red poured into a paper cup.

We hopped into the restaurant bathroom for a quick freshen-up before a long ride home and were met with a soggy floor and soiled toilet seat. From diva to (nose) dive in under 60 minutes.

  • Atishi`s health deteriorates due to indefinite hunger strike; admitted to hosp

Delhi Minister Atishi has been admitted to the hospital after her health condition deteriorated as she was on an indefinite hunger strike against the Haryana government for not releasing 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water thus creating Delhi water crisis, reported news agency ANI.

Atishi has been admitted to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital in the national capital in the early hours of Tuesday, reported ANI.

Atishi`s indefinite hunger strike entered its fifth day on Tuesday. She said that Haryana is not releasing Delhi`s share of water.

Earlier on June 22, Atishi started her indefinite hunger strike protesting for Haryana to release Delhi water share.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said doctors have advised Atishi to be admitted to a hospital in view of her deteriorating health but she is fighting for Delhi`s rightful share of water by “risking her life”, reported ANI.

According to the AAP press release, a health checkup done on the minister revealed that her blood pressure and sugar levels dropped drastically, reported ANI.

The speed with which Atishi`s blood sugar level and blood pressure have dropped has been described by doctors as dangerous, said AAP, reported ANI.

Water Minister Atishi, who is on an indefinite hunger strike to ensure the water rights of 28 lakh Delhiites, has said that her indefinite hunger strike will continue till the Haryana government provides the water rights of Delhiites and till the gates of Hathnikund Barrage are not opened, said AA, reported ANI.

The AAP has alleged that the neighbouring state of Haryana is supplying 100 million gallons per day (MGD) less water every day, which has severely affected the lives of 28 lakh people in Delhi, adding to the problem of water shortage, reported ANI.

The Delhi water crisis arose with the high temperatures and heat waves in the national capital.

The people of Delhi have been counting on water tankers to avail their daily requirements of water.

Amid soaring temperatures, these scenes have become a daily occurrence in many areas of the national capital since the start of the summer season this year.

  • Party over, reality dawns! West Indies rue another missed opportunity

It was a depressing Monday morning in the Caribbean after the West Indies crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2024 it was hosting after a 14-year gap.

A collective dream of millions in the region came crashing after Marco Jansen deposited a full ball from Obed McCoy for a six down the ground to seal a nervy win for South Africa over the tournament co-hosts.

It is difficult to match the frenzied fan following that cricket enjoys in India but if there is any region that comes close to the Asian country, it is the Caribbean.

Across the six World Cup venues, the buzz around the tournament was palpable but the loss on Sunday night has sent the happy-go-lucky fans into their shell.

“It is depressing but the West Indies had it coming. They were poor in all departments last night,” said Papios, a police officer who was guarding an almost empty Darren Sammy Stadium ahead of the India-Australia game here.

The stage was set for the West Indies to win a record third T20 World Cup 2024 and part of the narrative was local hero Darren Sammy, who gained stardom following the two titles he won as captain, and this time the whole region was banking on him to repeat the feat as the head coach of the side.

Following the heart-breaking loss in Antigua, the sentiment towards him has certainly changed.

“It is time we sack him. He is not good for the team and does politics. Poor selection cost the team,” said a member of the ground staff here.

The game`s passionate follower in Barbados, Kevin Brathwaite, also has a pessimistic view about the future of the sport in the region.

“I don`t support the West Indies team. I am supporting England in this tournament. There is too much regional politics in the game here. So there is no reason to support them. I would want to see West Indies bring back the glory days in Test cricket but with the way things are going, it is not happening in the foreseeable future. Everyone wants to play in the IPL but not Test cricket,” said Brathwaite.

Despite the outcome on Sunday night, the health of the shortest format is unlikely to be impacted. It is the other two formats where the West Indies are lagging behind. Each team plays only five first-class games per season in the Caribbean.

“Test cricket is dying and it not surprising. We have the shortest first-class season. We are way behind in ODIs too (West Indies could not qualify for ODI World Cup 2023).

“Unfortunately, the World Cup result last night won`t impact the T20 format. That is where the money is.

“In this World Cup, they had issues with their batting and bowling all through and may have experimented with their selection at least against smaller teams like Uganda,” said 85-year-old Saint Lucia-based commentator Joseph Perreira, who has covered seven World Cups including the first three one in 1975, 1979 and 1983.

Had the West Indies gone all the way, the party in the Caribbean would have gone on for months but now it will have to wait.

  • Maharashtra: Congress demands loan waive, hike in milk procurement prices

The Congress on Monday threatened to launch protests if the milk procurement price in Maharashtra was not hiked and demanded a loan waiver for farmers. The threat listed the issues the opposition party planned to bring up in the upcoming session of the state legislature, according to PTI.

State Congress unit president Nana Patole demanded the Shiv Sena-BJP government declare a loan waiver for farmers along the lines of Telangana in the legislature session, reportedly beginning on June 27 in Mumbai.

According to the news agency report, Patole said the Congress government in Telangana has waived loans up to Rs 2 lakh for each farmer and fulfilled the poll assurance.

Amid a massive row over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exam, Patole alleged BJP-ruled states have links to the paper leaks and accused the Central government of playing with the future of students.

“Farmers are getting a procurement price of Rs 45 (per liter) for milk compared to Rs 27 in Maharashtra. The same milk is sold to consumers by Amul and other dairy companies at Rs 55 to Rs 60 per liter,” the Congress leader claimed. Reportedly, Patole also accused the state Mahayuti government of being “anti-farmer.”

As per the PTI report, he demanded immediate intervention by the state government and raising the milk procurement prices being paid to milk producers.

Accusing the Shiv Sena-BJP government of exploiting milk producers who have made significant contributions to the White Revolution, Patole stated, “Otherwise, we will have to hit the streets to seek justice for farmers.”

He said the cost of fodder and other expenses for maintaining cows and buffaloes have soared, but the milk procurement price has remained muted, as reported by PTI.

Meanwhile, as many as 16 senior leaders of the Mumbai Congress have reportedly demanded to replace its city unit chief, Varsha Gaikwad, to strengthen the organisation ahead of the Maharashtra assembly polls. The polls are due in October this year.

According to PTI sources, the Congress leaders feel that Gaikwad, who recently won the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha seat, will not have time to work at the organisational level. They have objected to her style of functioning.

These leaders, in a letter dated June 16, have sought time from the Congress leadership to discuss the rejuvenation of the party in Mumbai ahead of the assembly elections and the Mumbai civic polls, which are overdue.

Signatories to the letter include Rajya Sabha MP and Congress Working Committee member Chandrakant Handore, former city party chiefs Janardhan Chandurkar and Bhai Jagtap, senior leaders Naseem Khan, Suresh Shetty, Madhu Chavan, Charansingh Sapra, Zakir Ahmed, and Maharashtra Congress treasurer Amarjit Manhas, reported PTI.

  • Sri Lanka sports minister denies night club visit caused team`s T20 WC exit

Sri Lankan Sports Minister Harin Fernando on Monday challenged the critics to prove that the alleged night club visit had caused the cricket team`s premature exit in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 in the Americas.

Sri Lanka could not progress to the Super 8s stage, finishing third in Group D behind South Africa and Bangladesh, who made the grade.

“I challenged them (critics) to prove it, and I will resign if they can prove it,” Fernando said referring to a comment reportedly made by his predecessor.

It has been alleged that the team was late for a practice session due to their late night-out.

Fernando had taken over the ministry in November 2023 from Roshan Ranasinghe, who was removed from the post by president Ranil Wickremesinghe following his action to sack the Sri Lanka Cricket management and appoint an interim committee.

The International Cricket Council had subsequently suspend Sri Lanka`s membership due to government interference.

Fernando said all the facilities were provided by the cricket governing body to the players.

Sri Lanka, who were champions in 2014, lost in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 to South Africa and Bangladesh, while their game against Nepal was washed out. They only registered a win against the Netherlands.

In the recent encounter against Netherlands, the side defeated the latter by 83 runs at the Daren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia.

Opener Kusal Mendis and middle-order batsman Charith Asalanka posted identical scores of 46 to set the pace for the 2014 champions in a total of 201 for six, the first 200-plus total ever posted at this ground in a T20 International. With their hopes of Super Eight qualification rapidly disappearing as Bangladesh closed in on victory in a low-scoring encounter unfolding at the same time in St Vincent, the Dutch faded after a bright start in being dismissed for 118 off 16.4 overs in reply.

Captain Scott Edwards and opener Michael Levitt contributed joint-topscores of 31 but Sri Lanka`s varied and talented attack was too good for the Netherlands line-up, pacer Nuwan Thushara leading the way with three for 24.

Mendis` effort came off 29 balls (five fours) while Asalanka, following in his wake, occupied eight balls fewer courtesy of one four and five sixes, most of them boosted by a strong crosswind at the venue on the northern tip of the island. Logan van Beek, grandson of the late former West Indies and New Zealand wicketkeeper/batsman Simpson “Sammy” Guillen, was the leading wicket-taker with victims off successive balls in his third over although his four overs cost 45 runs.

  • T20 WC 2024: Powell wants his players to prioritise playing for WI

The T20 World Cup 2024 campaign may have ended for West Indies, but skipper Rovman Powell hailed the side for bringing back the “buzz”. He also stated that his players should prioritise national duty over featuring in franchise cricket.

Earlier, West Indies suffered disgrace in the last two T20 World Cup editions. In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, they fell short against South Africa in the Super 8 match.

“There`s a buzz around the region now in playing for West Indies so hopefully that continues, hopefully, we continue on the right path,” Powell said in the post-match interaction.

Powell acknowledged the allure and financial incentives of franchise cricket, which make it challenging for the West Indies, a smaller cricket board, to consistently field their best team.

“It`s been good so far for the last year or two. Hopefully, guys can always and will mainly choose to play for West Indies.”

Also Read: T20 World Cup 2024, IND vs AUS: Key battles!

“It`s always a case for me as a captain to continue to motivate guys to play for West Indies. The driving force of franchise cricket and the money that comes with franchise cricket make it always difficult for a small board like West Indies to field their best team,” he added.

Rovman Powell also opened up on the T20I progress West Indies made in the last 12 months. “Not just this tournament but the cricket that we have played over the last 12 months to move from number nine in the world to number three in the ICC ranking is an absolutely amazing jump.

“It`s for us as a team to continue working. It`s for us as a team to stay still close, close-knit and it`s for us as a team to just keep on building.”

Powell also hoped that his side would come back stronger in the next edition of the T20 World Cup which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

“Hopefully guys here can continue playing and doing well in international cricket and franchise cricket… And when that time comes, we`ll have the same core of players trying to win a World Cup for the Caribbean.”

South Africa did well to restrict West Indies to 135 for 8. In reply, the Proteas were 15 for 2 in two overs when rain disrupted proceedings for close to an hour.

But after the resumption, the Proteas batters went hammer and tongs to chase down the revised target of 123 in 17 overs with five balls to spare.

West Indies skipper Rovman Powell admitted that his side fell short of 20 runs on the pitch which got better after the rain rain interruption. “As a team, we played some good cricket. We play good cricket in patches and tonight our batters were 15-20 runs short on a difficult wicket,” he said.

“The inclement weather isn`t something we can control, especially when you`re batting first. So, our plan was to be aggressive… We tried to transfer the pressure as a batting group, but it just didn`t work.”

“It wasn`t the easiest off surface but as players, we have to adapt and come up with solutions. It needed a little bit more grit a little bit more determination…”

Powell said it became difficult for his spinners to grip the wet ball after rain. “We knew it was always going to be a little bit difficult with a wet ball especially for us with three spinners but having said that I think the guys, bowling group have to be commended only 130 on the board and I think they really fought for us.”

Powell also feels that the Super 8 match loss against England cost them. “It was very disappointing for us as players but also it was a wake-up call because we were playing consistently good cricket so it showed us that hey on in T20 cricket, anything is possible,” he added.

  • WCL launches with resurrection of historic bowl-out format

The World Championship of Legends 2024 (WCL) is poised to enhance its stature in the cricketing realm through an innovative twist. In the event of a deadlock, matches will now be decided using the evocative bowl-out format, a throwback to the early days of T20 cricket, rather than the contemporary super over. This move injects an element of nostalgia into the competition, while teams gear up to vie in this high-stakes format amidst an atmosphere charged with excitement, destined to conjure memories of legendary moments and iconic performances.

The decision to embrace the `bowl-out` method for resolving tied matches hearkens back to the infancy of T20 cricket, offering a nostalgic and electrifying dimension appreciated by both participants and spectators alike. In this format, bowlers take aim at the stumps unguarded by a batsman, promising intense tension and exhilaration, where each delivery becomes pivotal in decisive moments. The World Championship of Legends 2024 pays homage to cricket`s storied past while presenting fans with a refreshing departure from the conventional tie-breakers employed in contemporary cricket. It harks back to a more carefree era, transporting cricket aficionados to a time when innovation and excitement were at the forefront of the sport`s evolution.

The introduction of the bowl-out format marks a deliberate nod to cricket`s rich tapestry, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity within the esteemed framework of the WCL. As cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the unfolding drama, the resonance of historical significance melds seamlessly with the thrill of competition in a manner that is both captivating and enriching. Each bowl-out encounter will not only decide the fate of the match but also serve as a poignant reminder of cricket`s enduring legacy and its ability to evolve while preserving its cherished heritage.

Furthermore, the adoption of this format underscores the WCL`s commitment to fostering innovation and offering a unique spectator experience. By reintroducing the bowl-out, organizers aim to rekindle the spirit of excitement and unpredictability that characterized cricket`s early forays into the T20 format. This decision reflects a thoughtful approach to honoring cricket`s roots while embracing the evolution of the game, catering to a diverse audience hungry for both tradition and novelty.

Moreover, the bowl-out`s reinstatement in the WCL represents a tribute to the skill and nerve required of players in such pressure-laden scenarios. As teams prepare to engage in this distinctive form of competition, the significance of precision and strategic acumen becomes heightened, encapsulating the essence of sporting prowess and resilience. The bowl-out format not only challenges the prowess of bowlers but also amplifies the strategic depth of captains and the collective composure of teams under duress.

Harshit Tomar, owner of WCL, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming tournament: “2007, India vs Pakistan bowl out is still one of my favourite memories, hence we want to revive it and keep it very original.”

  • Mumbai: Woman killed, two injured by learner driver in Kandivali identified

The woman who died in the Kandivali accident last week has been identified by the Kandivali police as Phoolmati Nembulal Jaiswar, 60, a resident of the Poisar locality in Kandivali East.

According to police sources, Jaiswar regularly visited the Jari Mari Temple, walking from her home each day. On the day of the accident, as usual, her husband left for work while she headed to the temple. Near the Poisar Depot, a learner driver lost control of his vehicle and hit her from behind.

“We were initially unable to identify her,” an officer from the Kandivali police station explained. “The next morning, her husband reported her missing to the Samta Nagar police after failing to locate her. Her name was tattooed on her hand, which helped us identify her.”

The deceased’s sons arrived from Delhi, and her body was handed over to them after the post-mortem for the last rites, said Senior Inspector Dyaneshwar Ganore of Kandivali police station.

The cab owner, Rajendra Gupta, and the learner driver, Surendra Gupta, 30, have been booked and arrested under IPC sections 304(2) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 279 (rash driving), and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), as well as sections 184 and 181(3)(5) of the Motor Vehicles Act. They have been remanded in police custody.

    Tragic Accident Details

A tragic accident occurred in Kandivali on Friday when a learner driver accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. The car went out of control and struck Phoolmati Nembulal Jaiswar, 60, killing her instantly. The car also injured two other people, including a 16-year-old boy, who were later discharged after receiving primary treatment at the hospital.

One of the victims, Parwashkumar Baral, 36, recounted the incident. Baral, a resident of Bihari Tekdri Poisar, was heading to Kandivali to buy plumbing materials when he heard a noise. Before he could react, a white WagonR car struck him, causing him to fall. He then witnessed the car hitting a 16-year-old boy before coming to a stop. Turning around, Baral saw an elderly woman lying on the road with blood coming from her head, realizing the car had run over her.

Police interrogation revealed that Surendra Gupta, 30, was learning to drive under the instruction of Rajendra Gupta, who was seated beside him. Surendra mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, losing control of the car. The vehicle first hit Jaiswar, running over her head, then struck Baral and the boy before stopping near Fare Green Society on Gaon Devi Road, Poisar.

The other injured individuals were identified as Saurabh Yadav, 16, and Baral

  • Afghan fans aglow after historic T20 World Cup win over Australia

Beleaguered Afghans were riding high Monday after a historic weekend T20 World Cup 2024 victory over Australia spread a rare mood of euphoria across the country.

“With every ball, every run, every boundary, every wicket, I wasn`t able to hold my emotions,” said university student Zamir Afghan in the capital Kabul. “It was very early morning, but I was jumping, screaming, I was not able to contain myself,” the 20-year-old told AFP.

“I couldn`t stop my tears.” Afghanistan seized on a poor Australian field performance to post 148-6 in their innings before bowling the 2021 champions out for 127 — their first ever win over Australia. “Afghanistan as a nation has suffered a lot, such moments are rare for us,” said Afghan.

Whilst cricket is hugely popular in Afghanistan, the match over 11,000 kilometres (7,000 miles) away in Arnos Vale on the Caribbean island of St Vincent, took place around dawn local time.

Though the last ball was bowled around 8:30 am (0400 GMT) on Sunday, many diehard fans had been awake to witness the win. In eastern Khost city, around 1,000 raucous cricket fans gathered to bask in the glow of fireworks early on Sunday morning in half an hour of revelry swiftly broken up by Taliban security forces.

An uncowed smaller crowd came together again at night, clapping as they lit off more pyrotechnics. Since the Taliban took over in August 2021 and introduced an austere vision of Islam, scenes of public jubilation have been rare. “Such moments are special for everyone,” said 18-year-old fruit shop worker Saddam Saleh.

“Beating the mighty Australia is not something small.” The result bolsters Afghanistan`s chances of reaching the semi-finals in the competition co-hosted by the USA and West Indies, though they must first face Bangladesh on Tuesday.

“In sports there are always `ifs` and `buts`, but there is a very good chance for Afghanistan to qualify,” said 28-year-old Usman Ahmadzai. “They even have the potential to be in the final and be champions — we couldn`t wish for more.”

Afghanistan has been isolated since the withdrawal of foreign forces and the collapse of the US-backed government, with diplomats wary of engaging with Taliban rulers. The isolation has spilled into the world of sport. Cricket Australia has withdrawn from bilateral series because of the “deterioration in human rights” for women and girls in Afghanistan.

“The Afghanistan national team responded to their disrespect on the pitch,” said 32-year-old Shahid, who goes by only one name. “No one should ever underestimate the greatness of Afghanistan.”

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde performed Bhoomipujan for development projects worth Rs 547 crore in Bhandara district on Monday.

Out of Rs. 547 crore, Rs. 102 crore will be allocated to water tourism projects, said an official release. He expressed confidence that these initiatives will significantly boost tourism in the district and create substantial employment opportunities.

The Chief Minister announced that he would approve the plan to increase water tourism in the Wainganga reservoir and declare a public holiday on the occasion of Baba Jumdev`s birth anniversary (April 3), which is a place of worship for devotees.

Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde performed Bhoomipujan for various development projects, including the first phase of the Water Tourism Centre. As per the official release, the proposed water tourism project will be located at Maundi in Bhandara and includ tourism facilities like swimming pool, artificial lake, information centre, conference halls, etc.

Other developmental projects include Underground Drainage Scheme, beautification of lakes at Bhandara and Pavani under the Amrit Yojana, road construction work under the Urban Development Campaign, special scheme works under Bhandara and Pavani Municipal Councils, various development works in Bhandara and Pavani Municipal Councils under the District Planning Committee, various facilities at the District Sports Complex Bhandara, and various works under the Public Works Department.

MLA Narendra Bhondekar, Inspector General of Police Chering Dorje, Collector Yogesh Kumbhejkar, Chief Executive Officer of District Council Sameer Kurtakoti and Superintendent of Police Lohit Matani also presided over the occasion.

Investigate issue at DPS lake in Navi Mumbai, CM Eknath Shinde asks UD dept

Responding to pleas by green groups to save the 30-acre DPS Flamingo Lake at Nerul in Navi Mumbai from being allegedly buried by CIDCO for commercial gains, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has asked the Urban Development Department to investigate the issue.

Non-profit NatConnect Foundation had requested the CM’s intervention to transfer the lake to Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) for conservation. A proposal from NMMC for conserving the lake in association with BNHS is already pending with CIDCO. NatConnect director BN Kumar, therefore, urged CM Shinde to have the proposal cleared quickly.

The CM directed Aseem Gupta, principal secretary, UD-1, to take appropriate action on the issues raised by NatConnect Foundation, including the choking of tidal water inlets to the lake thus rendering it dry.

The lake supports biodiversity and is a home to thousands of flamingos, Kumar informed the CM. Moreover, CIDCO has allegedly violated the stipulation imposed by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the State Forest Department not to interfere with the free flow of tidal water while destroying 0.46 hectares of mangroves for the passenger water transport terminal at Nerul, Kumar said.

Though CIDCO itself had given an undertaking under the Forest Conservation Act that the water flow would not be affected, the main channel on the southern end of the lake was blocked, which has been confirmed by the Forest Department inspection. Under pressure, NMMC opened a couple of blocks and water started flowing into the lake, but CIDCO took umbrage and filed a complaint with the NRI Coastal Police against the civic body. This has been confirmed by CIDCO’s complaint to the police. Meanwhile, CIDCO put up a notice at the DPS Flamingo Lake proclaiming that trespassers will be prosecuted.

“We are happy that the CMO has responded quickly, and we shall follow-up with the UD through the RTI route,” Kumar said. mid-day reached out to CIDCO, but there was no response until the time of going to press.

  • Rain lashes out in St Lucia threatening high stakes India-Australia clash

Dark clouds covered the island as it received rainfall, threatening the high-stakes clash between India and Australia at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eight match on Monday.

Ahead of the clash between the heavyweights, the venue in Saint Lucia is currently facing some downpours with gloomy conditions.

A win against Australia will cement India`s top spot in Group 1, while a loss could see them overtaken by Australia and even Afghanistan should they win against Bangladesh in the last match of the Super Eights.

Meanwhile, the island on Sunday also received heavy rain.

Rohit Sharma-led Team India are currently holding the top spot in Group 1 of the Super Eights after sealing a win in all of their previous two matches against Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Men in Blue will head into the match after beating Bangladesh by 50 runs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium. Meanwhile, Mitchell Marsh`s Australia suffered a humbling 21-run defeat against Afghanistan in their previous match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Also Read: India flex, Australia worry!

In a pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Australia, India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey believes that if the execution is right, nothing will stop Men in Blue from prevailing over the Aussies in a clash of heavyweights. The bowling coach said that the “implementation of plans” against the Aussies will play a big role.

“We played them initially. Earlier, a lot of these guys have played against them. A lot of guys have played in the IPL. So, in terms of knowing of the game, the approach that is going to change has been similar in the past games that we played. I don`t think it`s going to change. I think it`s all what we can do is really focus on the implementation of our plans,” Mhambrey said in a pre-match press conference.

“And the bottom line is execution. I think if you`re as close to execution, you will win every game. So, it`s not about what the other opponent`s going to do yet. We know what kind of approach they come with. That`s the way they played in the past as well. But I think the focus purely should be on, that`s what we will focus on in execution. And if we`re as close to our plans, I`m pretty sure that we`re going to cross the other side.

On the other hand, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald opened up about the struggle to cope with playing in a short time between Afghanistan and India matches, which involves air travel.

“I mean, once the draw comes out, you are well aware of what you need to do and, in your planning, and preparation and that goes into it months before you get here and we feel like as I said we have made some good decisions in our planning and prep and coming in and yeah, we have got another challenge with a short turnaround. Every team`s facing that, so yeah, it will be recovery mode tonight and tomorrow. Give the boys a bit of space and yeah, we would not drill into it too much tonight (loss to Afghanistan and lack of recovery time),” McDonald said in a pre-match press conference.

“As you said, it is pretty early in the morning. So, getting that information in will happen in the morning of the Indian game. So, a bit of space. The boys know where we went wrong. They are an experienced group. But there is no doubt when we come back together on the morning of the Indian game, we need to be at our best. And to be at our best, we need recovery. And if people do not recover in time, then clearly, we will make decisions based around that. But so far so good, everyone has pulled up well,” he added.

India Squad: Rohit Sharma(c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal, Sanju Samson, Mohammed Siraj and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

  • T20 WC 2024 | "New Proteas team always seems to get over the line": Shamsi

South Africa has been carrying the unwanted tag of “chokers” for a long time now and wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi is delighted that the new Proteas team managed to get over the line at the T20 World Cup 2024.

So far, Aiden Markram-led South Africa is still unbeaten in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Navigating through some tense encounters, they have managed to end up on the right side of results. The margin of victories includes 1 run (Nepal), 4 runs (Bangladesh) and 7 runs (England).

Even in the T20 World Cup 2024 match against the hosts West Indies, South Africa managed to secure the win by three wickets to qualify for the semi-finals.

“Obviously most of the games have been a lot closer than we would have personally liked, but the amazing thing is that this new Proteas team always seems to get over the line,” Shamsi said at the post-match conference.

Also Read: T20 World Cup 2024, IND vs AUS: The clash with the past memories!

“We`ve been put under huge pressure basically in every single game that we`ve played and the boys have managed to find a way to win no matter what the situation is, no matter how close the game is. So that`s really pleasing for us as a unit, and it`s sort of like in a funny way we`re looking forward to it.”

Tabraiz Shamsi had a pretty bad outing in his match against the USA, but he bounced back by claiming three wickets for 27 runs against West Indies.

“It`s a double-edged sword right – the previous game I bowled later in the innings and I went for 50 and there was certain critics coming out from the wood works, speaking about pressure and how I can`t handle pressure and so to speak – I think in a quarterfinal match I hope that was enough pressure for me to respond to.” Shamsi is aware that there will be days when he will not be at his best.

“It`s just a little bit ridiculous when it`s ex-players – when they`re on the field they did the same things now we`re trying our best so what that`s part of the game right we got to go out there and do our job.

“It doesn`t really matter where I`m asked to bowl, whether it`s early on in the innings or at the back end. There`s a specific job that I`ve got to do. And we`ve all played enough cricket to understand that sometimes it will work, on other days it wouldn`t, and somebody else will cover for you, and vice versa.

“That`s the mentality that we have within the squad. Whoever`s day it is needs to take extra load and cover up for someone that`s maybe not having a good game and that`s perfectly normal, that`s cricket.”

Featuring in the Caribbean Premier League, Shamsi gathered all his experience of how West Indies players function which helped him to plan his spell accordingly.

“Fortunately, I`ve been able to play CPL for the last five or six years. And one thing with the West Indian boys, you don`t have to guess what their intent is going to be. So, it sort of helps you formulate a plan.”

  • T20 World Cup 2024 | "As Warner`s friend, want him to end on a high": Khawaja

Australia`s traditional opening batsman David Warner is all set to end his international career after the T20 World Cup 2024. Following this, his fellow teammate Usman Khawaja wants him to finish his career on a high.

“As a friend, I`d love to see him (Warner) finish on a high. He`s been playing some really good cricket. It`s been really nice to see. You can tell he`s just enjoying being out there. He`s playing pretty relaxed. So he should. Yeah, it would be good to see,” Khawaja told PTI Videos in an interview ahead of Australia`s last Super 8s match against India.

Khawaja is confident that a shocking defeat against Afghanistan won`t affect Mitchell Marsh and Co. in their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.

Even if Australia loses to India on Monday, Afghanistan will then need to win a huge margin against Bangladesh in order to better their net run rate than that of the Aussies.

“If Australia beats India and makes it to the semi-final, I think definitely, I think they can win. I think we`ve just got to get to the semi-final,” Khawaja said.

The veteran opening batsman also opened up about Australia lifting up their game in the knock-out stages. “I think we`ve shown over the years that we`re a great knockout team. As soon as there`s a knockout situation, more times than not we`ve won, but we`ve just got to get there.”

Khawaja praised Marsh for his leadership skills and his captaincy is a reflection of the kind of person he is. “I think his captaincy is just him. It`s him as a person. He doesn`t try to be anything that he`s not. He`s relaxed. He goes out and plays the game, takes the game on, leads from the front, leads by his actions. So, I`ve really enjoyed watching his captaincy,” he said.

Pakistan-born batsman Khawaja also acknowledged that no team is invincible but defeating India will also be a tough challenge. “I mean, India`s always a threat. They have batters left, right and centre. They have great bowlers. They have excellent spinners. They have literally all bases covered. They always have. I wouldn`t go out and say India`s so far ahead, a better team than everyone else, because they`re not. So I think on any day, any team can beat anyone, particularly in T20 cricket”, he observed.

Ahead of the series against India and then the Ashes in 2025, Usman Khawaja termed both teams as the pinnacle of the game. “It`s always tough to beat India in India. But in the last couple of series, India has beaten Australia in Australia, which is never nice for an Australian. So, yeah, we`ve got a lot to play for. It`s a big series. To me, England and India are the two biggest series,” he exclaimed.

He also opened up about the popularity of Test cricket in Australia and the new golden ticket initiative taken by Cricket Australia. “The baggy green is still the pinnacle of Australian cricket. I think we`re very lucky in Australia. I still think we get paid really well to play Test cricket. It`s not the same across the world. So, it`s a little bit different for us. We don`t have to try as hard. Because we have a long-standing tradition. And kids that grow up these days still want to get a baggy green,” he noted.

  • Health Ministry, NBE officials review NEET-PG exam process

Top officials from the Union health ministry and the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences reviewed the process of the NEET-PG exam on Monday, two days after the entrance examination to was postponed.

The meeting was held to check the “robustness” of the system for the conduct of the exam in the coming days, sources said as per the PTI report.

“The process of uploading the NEET-PG exam paper starts an hour before the exam is to be held. This time it was postponed as a preventive measure to ensure the exam is held in a transparent and secure manner. New dates will be announced soon depending upon the availability of centres,” the source said as per PTI.

The National Eligibility Entrance Test (Postgraduate) entrance examination is conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), along with its technical partner Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), for medical students.

According to sources, senior officers from the TCS were present in the meeting.

The government on Saturday postponed the NEET-PG entrance examination, scheduled to be held on June 23, as a “precautionary measure” in the wake of recent allegations on the integrity of certain competitive exams.

“Taking into consideration the recent incidents of allegations regarding the integrity of certain competitive examinations, the Ministry of Health has decided to undertake a thorough assessment of the robustness of processes of NEET-PG entrance examination, conducted by the National Board of Examination for medical students,” the ministry had said on Saturday postponing the exam.

“It has accordingly been decided, as a precautionary measure, to postpone the NEET-PG entrance examination, scheduled to be held tomorrow — 23rd June, 2024,” it had stated.

NEET-PG postponement another example that education system ruined under Modi: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday over the postponement of the NEET-PG, saying it was yet “another unfortunate example that the education system has been ruined”.

The Union Health Ministry said on Saturday that it has decided to postpone the NEET-PG entrance examination, scheduled to be held on June 23, as a “precautionary measure” in the wake of recent allegations on the integrity of certain competitive exams. In a post in Hindi on `X`, Gandhi said, “Now NEET-PG is also postponed. This is another unfortunate example of the education system that has been ruined under the rule of Narendra Modi.”

Under the BJP`s rule, instead of building their careers by studying, students are forced to fight the government to save their future, he said. “Now it is clear — Modi, who used to silently watch the spectacle every time — is completely helpless in front of the paper leak racket and education mafia,” the former Congress chief said.

“Narendra Modi`s incompetent government is the biggest threat to the future of students. We have to save the future of the country from it,” he added. Facing flak over alleged irregularities in competitive exams, the Centre on Saturday shunted out National Testing Agency (NTA) Director General Subodh Singh and set up a seven-member panel headed by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan to review the agency`s functioning and recommend exam reforms.

On Friday, the June edition of the Joint Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (CSIR-UGC-NET) was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances and logistic issues. On Wednesday, UGC-NET was cancelled following inputs that the exam`s integrity was compromised.

Opposition parties have also claimed irregularities in the medical entrance exam NEET-UG, the results of which were announced by NTA on June 4. A probe into the alleged irregularities in this exam has been handed over to CBI.

  • Streets, footpaths cleared for PM and VVIPs, why not for everyone: Bombay HC

The Bombay High Court on Monday said when streets and footpaths are cleared for the prime minister and other VVIPs for one day, why can`t it be done on a daily basis for everyone else too, reported news agency PTI.

Having a clear footpath and a safe place to walk was every person`s fundamental right and the state authorities were obligated to provide the same, a division bench of Justices M S Sonak and Kamal Khata, reported PTI.

The state cannot perpetually just wonder what can be done to work out the problem of unauthorised hawkers encroaching upon footpaths in the city and has to now do something drastically, the bench said.

The high court last year took suo motu (on its own) cognizance of the issue of illegal and unauthorised hawkers and vendors in the city, reported PTI.

On Monday, the bench said while it knows the problem is large, the state and other authorities, including the civic body, cannot just leave it at that and called for some drastic action, reported PTI.

“When the prime minister or some VVIPs come, the streets and footpaths are immediately cleared…and it stays so till they are here. How is it done then? Why can`t it be done for everyone else? Citizens are ratepayers…they need to have a clear footpath and safe place to walk,” the court said, reported PTI.

“Footpath and a safe place to walk is a fundamental right. We tell our children to walk on footpaths but if there is no footpath left to walk on, what do we tell our children?” the court asked, reported PTI.

For years together, the authorities have been saying they are working on the issue, it said.

“The state has to do something drastically. It cannot be that the authorities are perpetually just wondering what to do and working on it. There seems to be a lack of will, because where there is a will there is always a way,” the HC said, reported PTI.

Senior counsel S U Kamdar, appearing for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), said periodic action is taken against such vendors and hawkers but they keep coming back.

He said the BMC was also considering the option of underground markets.

The court then remarked in jest that the corporation was literally trying to bury the problem underground.

The bench noted the fine imposed by civic bodies on these vendors/hawkers was irrelevant as they have higher sales per day.

“Your fine is pittance to them. They will pay and leave,” the HC said, reported PTI.

The court suggested the BMC to develop a database identifying all such hawkers so that they do not breach orders and come back with their stalls.

“Let there be a combing operation. Start with one street…the biggest trouble is identification. They keep coming back because they are not identifiable,” it said.

The court posted the matter for further hearing on July 22.

  • T20 WC 2024 | "There are heaps of learnings": Corey Anderson after WC exit

The fairytale run of the USA`s cricket team in the T20 World Cup 2024 was ended by England, but Corey Anderson said that his team is signing off the tournament with their heads held high and heaps of learning.

The USA were knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 after facing defeat against West Indies, England and South Africa. This was after having a great run in the group-stage matches.

“I mean sky`s the limit really…the last few years there`s always been whispers around what`s happening in America with cricket…hopefully in years to come as well, we can kind of grow that,” said Anderson after the Super 8 match loss against England.

“I mean there`s probably a lot of areas that we need to improve on. We are still an Associate nation, growing, trying to get a bigger player pool. Making it through the Super 8s was obviously a historic occasion for the USA,” he added.

Also Read: T20 World Cup 2024: Will the “Blues” be able to wash out past “Yellow” memories?

Asked to explain the USA`s loss of momentum after a galvanising league run, Anderson said it was a case of `Big Boys` raising their level when it mattered against a mostly novice team.

“The last couple of games have just been not quite there, but that`s what happens in the Super 8 competition is the bigger boys start to really show up and they`re kind of hitting their stride right at the back end of this competition,” he said.

“We don`t get to play against these big teams often or at all. So, anything that we can play against these guys is hugely valuable. It`s probably a little bit raw at the moment obviously, but yeah there`s heaps of learnings out of that,” he added.

Corey Anderson is one of the most talented players in the USA team. The team is made up of players from West Indian, Indian and Pakistan origin. One of their top performers in the T20 World Cup 2024 was Saurah Netravalkar who also works as a full-time software engineer with Oracle.

Anderson said there is understandable disappointment in the camp right now but there is also a feeling of accomplishment.

“…they`re disappointed. They`re hurt. I`m hurt. Your pride`s always on the line when you`re playing these games and you never want to lose badly or have performances like that,” he said referring to the 10-wicket loss to England here.

“But again, it`s looking at the bigger picture of it too. If we`re a team and we first started and we`re beginning to be disappointed about how we play against these big teams and knowing that we can do better, that`s a great sign because it means we can give more,” he explained.

Corey Anderson did not display any extraordinary knock in the 20 World Cup 2024. Acknowledging that he said it hurt the team as he was among the most experienced in their line-up.

“My performance has been lacklustre for what I expected myself. I think as a team we did a fantastic job to get to where we were and we had different guys stepping up at different times.

“Unfortunately, I couldn`t chime in and help when we probably, the wheels were falling off a little bit. I needed to play better than what I did and there was probably opportunities that I missed out on,” he said.

So far, his contributions have been crucial for India because of his ability to pick wickets at any stage of the game. Also, the inclusion of wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the West Indies` leg has been fruitful for the side as he has managed to pick wickets in both matches. The positive for India is the return of swashbuckling Rishabh Pant. He has been a consistent performer for the side in the ongoing event. Additionally, Hardik Pandya has been able to showcase his skills with the ball after having a horrific IPL 2024.

  • Chhagan Bhujbal wants riots in Maharashtra, says Jarange

Maratha Quota activist Manoj Jarange on Monday accused Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal of using provocative language intended to incite a rift between Marathas and OBCs, potentially triggering riots, reported news agency PTI.

While addressing a press conference from a private hospital in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Jarange said, “If he wants riots to happen in the state, the Maratha community should also remain alert,” reported PTI.

Reportedly Jarange announced that the next steps for the Maratha quota agitation will be determined after July 13.

Jarange has been leading protests, demanding that all Marathas and their blood relatives be issued Kunbi certificates, enabling them to claim OBC quotas, reported the news agency PTI.

Meanwhile, OBCs are rallying around Bhujbal to safeguard the existing quota.

In response to Chhagan Bhujbal`s alleged provocative statement, Jarange said, “Chhagan Bhujbal has made provocative statements in Pune. Bhujbal said figuratively `Keep your rusted swords ready,` but his statement implies he wants riots to happen in Maharashtra and divide communities. I appeal to the Maratha community to remain alert,” reported the PTI.

As per the PTI report, Jarange said, “The Maratha community is now in trouble while I am left alone. But I will fight back and ensure that the Maratha community gets reservation under the Other Backward Classes category.”

As per the news agency report, he claimed that state minister Shambhuraj Desai has requested Maratha protesters to wait until July 13.

“We will decide about the next strategy after July 13,” he added, reported the PTI.

Jarange also urged members of the Maratha community to participate in rallies organised next month to raise awareness about their right to claim reservation under the OBC grouping.

This remark comes amid escalating tensions over the quota issue following a hunger strike by OBC leaders that galvanised various backward classes and prompted government intervention.

Maharashtra is experiencing polarisation as the Maratha community demands inclusion under the OBC grouping for reservations in government jobs and education.

  • "Shameless crass politics…": BJP leaders slam Shashi Tharoor`s post on UP

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders on Sunday slammed Congress leader Shashi Tharoor over his post on Uttar Pradesh and said the post of the Thiruvananthapuram MP demonstrates “shameless crass politics of shaming fellow Indians”.

This comes after Congress leader Shashi Tharoor shared an image on X that had a question and an answer. The question in Hindi was, “What is called Uttar Pradesh?” The answer was: “Weh pradesh jahan pariksha se pehle uttar ka pata chal jaaye, usse Uttar Pradesh kehte hai (The state where the answer is known before the exam is called Uttar Pradesh).”

Tharoor described the post as “shandaar” and added the hashtag “Pariksha pe charcha” a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s initiative to interact with students.

Former Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar also reacted to Tharoor`s tweet and said, “Shameless crass politics of shaming other fellow Indians – that the Congress way, ably demonstrated by this self-titled Global citizen.”

“It was just a few months ago, that another member of Congress “global citizens” Pitroda described Indians as Africans, Chinese, Middle Eastern etc Runs deep in the Cong DNA, this type of superiority complex,” Chandrasekhar posted on X.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that he is surprised that Tharoor chose to stereotype, trivialise and caricature an entire state like this.

“Seriously, Shashi Tharoor is this the level to which you wish to take this discourse? Uttar Pradesh is not only known for its contribution to our civilisation but has also produced innumerable literary luminaries, political stalwarts and achievers. Ironically, it is also home to the first family, to which all Congress leaders pay obeisance. Despite the privilege of having been educated at the best of institutions, I am surprised that you chose to stereotype, trivialise and caricature an entire state like this. Need for serious introspection, my friend,” Puri posted on X.

Responding to Shashi Tharoor`s post, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, the Congress leader has succumbed to the “beguiling whispers of lunacy, his mind adrift in the ethereal mists of derangement.”

“This gentleman frequently indulges in satirizing various cultures (first Northeast and now UP) with remarkably caustic words. He has succumbed to the beguiling whispers of lunacy, his mind adrift in the ethereal mists of derangement,” Sarma said.

  • UP STF arrests 6 for `leaking` exam paper to recruit review officers

The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police on Sunday arrested six members of a gang, including a staff of a printing press, for their alleged involvement in leaking the examination paper for the posts of review officers and assistant review officers. The arrests were made in Prayagraj, the STF said in a statement. The exam, conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC), was held across the state on February 11. The state government cancelled the exam on March 2, following reports that the paper was leaked. Those arrested are — Sunil Raghuvanshi, a resident of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh and a printing press worker, Subhash Prakash, a resident of Madhubani in Bihar, Vishal Dubey and Sandeep Pandey (residents of Prayagraj), Amarjeet Sharma, a resident of Gaya (Bihar), and Vivek Upadhyay, a resident of Ballia.

A laptop, six mobile phones and five blank cheques were seized from them, the STF said. Prior to this, 10 people were arrested in this connection. A case under sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 465 (punishment for forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will etc.), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 34 (common intention), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen offender) of the IPC has been lodged at the Civil Lines police station in Prayagraj. Charges under the Uttar Pradesh Public Examination Act, 1998 and Information Technology Act have also been slapped on the arrested accused, police said. The STF also said that during interrogation of the arrested accused, it was found that the question paper of the said examination was leaked in two ways.

First, this question paper was leaked from the examination centre itself on the day of the examination on February 11 at around 06.30 am before the commencement of the examination by scanning it with the help of mobile phones by Kamlesh Kumar Pal alias KK, Dr. Sharad Singh Patel, Saurabh Shukla, Arun Singh and Arpit Vineet Yashwant, who looks after the examination work of Bishop Johnson Girls School and College Prayagraj. All five have already been arrested by the UP STF and sent to jail in this connection, they said. The second way in which the said question paper was leaked was from the printing press. Sunil Raghuvanshi, an employee of the press, was involved in this, the STF said. On February 3, Raghuvanshi was present in the press on the pretext of repairing the machine. Upon getting an opportunity, he came out of the press with his drinking water bottle and brought the question paper out by hiding it inside, they said. He took the question paper to his house and kept it there. He informed Vishal Dubey about this and Dubey told Rajiv Nayan Mishra alias Rahul and Subhash Prakash.

After this, it was decided among these people that on February 8, they will gather at Komal Hotel with the candidates and solvers. The question paper will be solved by the solvers in the hotel itself and the candidates will be made to read it. Rajiv Nayan Mishra alias Rahul and his gang members had fixed Rs 12 lakh each from each candidate, they said. On February 8, as per the pre-planned plan, Vishal Dubey first reached Komal Hotel along with Sandeep Pandey. After this, Sunil Raghuvanshi reached there after getting 06-06 photocopies of the question paper. Following reports of the paper leak, the Uttar Pradesh government on March 2 cancelled the preliminary exam conducted on February 11 for the recruitment of review officers (ROs) and assistant review officers (AROs). Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had then directed that the exam be conducted again within six months. The STF was assigned the task to investigate the matter.

  • Mumbai weather update: City to see moderate rainfall today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest Mumbai weather update, has predicted a generally cloudy sky with the possibility of moderate rainfall and thundershowers in Mumbai on Saturday.

The weather department, in its latest Mumbai weather update, has predicted a “generally cloudy sky with moderate rain and thundershowers in the city and its suburbs” in the next 24 hours.

The maximum temperature in the city is likely to settle at 33 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature will be recorded at 26 degrees Celsius.

A high tide of about 4.54 metres is expected to hit Mumbai at 1.53 pm today, stated Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The civic body also said that a low tide of about 1.77 metres is expected at 7.57 pm today.

The island city recorded 6.55 mm of rainfall, eastern Mumbai 4.51 mm and western Mumbai 7.59 mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am.

Meanwhile, an official of the IMD on Wednesday had said that the south-west monsoon, which has slowed down after hitting Mumbai, is gathering pace and is expected to progress further by June 21-22.

The progress of the monsoon will provide much-needed relief to north India, which is reeling under an intense heatwave.

“Monsoon activity was weak after it hit Mumbai, but it is slowly turning moderate. It will strengthen by June 21-22 and coastal Maharashtra is likely to receive good rainfall. Central Maharashtra, including Marathwada, will receive light to moderate rainfall during this time,” Sunil Kamble, Head of the Regional Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai, told PTI.

Monsoon arrived in Mumbai on June 9, two days ahead of its normal schedule. Since then it made little progress and it is yet to cover parts of northern Maharashtra and Vidarbha.

India has received 20 per cent less rainfall since the start of the monsoon period on June 1, with the rain-bearing system making no significant progress between June 12 and 18.

On Tuesday the IMD said that June will receive below-normal rainfall.

June and July are considered the most important monsoon months for agriculture because most of the sowing for the Kharif crop takes place during this period.
